Publisher Description

“I’m doing something here that I’ve never done before, presenting the lengthy, raw interviews of my work. In the fall of 2019 through August 2020, I interviewed President Trump 19 times for my second book on his presidency, Rage. I had also interviewed him in 2016 when he was a presidential candidate. I decided to take this unusual step of releasing these recordings after relistening in full to all 20 interviews. As I listened to them again I was stunned by their relevance to understanding Trump. Hearing Trump speak is a completely different experience to reading the transcripts or listening to snatches of interviews on television or the internet.” —Bob Woodward from The Trump Tapes

The Trump Tapes is the intimate and astonishing audio archive of Bob Woodward’s 20 interviews with Donald Trump.

Featuring more than eight hours of Woodward/Trump conversations, The Trump Tapes is as historically important as the Frost/Nixon interviews. In this up-close, unvarnished self-portrait of Trump and his presidency, listeners will hear Trump as Woodward did: profane, incautious, divisive, and deceptive, but also engaging and entertaining, ever the host and the salesman, trying to sell his presidency to win Woodward over.

Relying on familiar devices—airing grievances, stoking divisions, repeating himself to a staggering degree, as if saying something often and loud enough will make something true—Trump uses his voice as a concussive instrument, pounding in the listener’s ear.

In new commentary created exclusively for The Trump Tapes, Woodward at times breaks frame from the interviews to provide essential context or clarification. But for the most part the interviews proceed uninterrupted, fulfilling Woodward’s goal of presenting Trump’s voice and words for the historical record, and offering listeners the chance to hear and judge and make their own assessments.

As relevant as ever to the task of understanding Donald Trump, The Trump Tapes reveal Trump in his own words—a man consumed by the past and clinging to his grievances, unable to understand his responsibilities as president or address the crises affecting the country.

"The Trump Tapes is an invaluable and astonishing audio archive for anyone interested in President Trump's thoughts and actions. Spanning eight hours of conversations between Woodward and Trump, the audiobook provides unparalleled insight into the current president's character. While it shows how he could be engaging and entertaining, it also reveals how often he was divisive, deceptive, and profane. Those listening to The Trump Tapes are treated to a raw and unvarnished portrait of the president as seen through Woodward's eyes. It is immediately apparent that Trump has difficulty understanding his own responsibilities as commander-in-chief and addressing the crises facing our nation. He is mired in past grievances rather than looking towards the future. No moment better encapsulates this than when he says "I always try to look out for myself, first and foremost" while discussing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's nuclear arsenal. At times the audiobook can feel disjointed due to its origins as one long conversation broken into bite-sized chunks; however, each clip leads logically onto the next. This makes it easy to jump back in if you have been away from it for a while or want to go back to review something interesting that you heard earlier on. One feature I particularly enjoyed was how some clips were taken from different conversations but had been stitched together so that they flowed naturally - making it sound like one continuous conversation in places! This audiobook is essential listening for anyone who wants a deeper insight into Donald Trump's mindset and worldview. Its lessons will remain relevant long after his presidential term, providing an important historical document about what made America's 45th president tick during his time in office."

Quotes

  • “There is no question that hearing Trump has an impact that reading alone cannot match…In a Morning Edition interview with NPR’s Steve Inskeep, Woodward speaks of how ‘the power of the audio’ brings home something disturbing about Trump. ‘His voice is so consumed with himself and how he feels and his conclusions.’”

" What is most frustrating about this, after listening to all 11.5 hours, is that as a centrist there are policies and arguments on the right that I wholly believe to be right. But Trump is not even a good articulator of the arguments, far from it. He just repeats a few mantras - repeats and repeats - and never manages to explain even the things he supposedly believes in. For him, it’s not about America. It’s not about the world. It’s not about the economy. It’s about Trump. And he’s embittered. "

" I recently listened to/read this book and found it to be quite informative and entertaining all at once. It was very educational hearing the different stances taken by Trump on certain issues, as well as learning how his decisions affected those around him in both positive and negative ways. Overall, I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone interested in learning more about Donald Trump's time in office as President of the United States of America. Woodward does an excellent job in providing a comprehensive overview of Trump's presidency that makes it hard to put down once you start listening! "

" The Trump Tapes is an insightful and engaging audio book that captures one of the most tumultuous periods in recent American history. It should be commended for its comprehensive coverage on a broad range of issues while not shying away from challenging topics or uncomfortable truths about our former president's behavior during this time period. Additionally, Woodward's reporting style makes it an easy listen even for those who may not have prior familiarity with politics or current events. In short, The Trump Tapes manages to be both informative and entertaining throughout its duration making it ideal for readers interested in gaining greater insight into the Trump presidency. Definitely recommended for history buffs! "

" This audiobook was absolutely stunning. I think every American should be made to read this book in school. Kind of like a reminder of what not to do in selecting a president. That this man, the Crazy Orange Unintelligent Past-president, or COUP, is allowed anywhere near another campaign is beyond me. Consider yourself forewarned as to all what this man did to his country he was put in temporary charge of for 4 years. Bob Woodward is amazing. I have all his previous books, but this one stands out as it's being read to you instead of the other way around. You're not locked in a chair turning pages. I highly recommend this book to whomever is contemplating who they want to lead their country before the choice is no longer theirs to make. Well done. "

" The Trump Tapes is a remarkable, intimate collection of conversations between the Woodward and Trump that offers a unique insight into the Trump presidency. Through these recordings, we get to observe Trump as he speaks candidly about his thoughts, beliefs and feelings on current events and politics. They cover a wide range of topics from immigration to foreign policy, making it an invaluable resource for anyone interested in learning more about what goes on inside the mind of our 45th president. The conversations are raw and unfiltered which can be uncomfortable to listen to as they do sometimes contain inappropriate language that may offend some readers (or listeners in this case). In addition, some sections may seem overwhelming due to the sheer volume of information contained within them. However, these conversations are also revealing in their honesty and candor; they provide us with a unique understanding of one of the most influential political figures in modern history. Overall, The Trump Tapes is a fascinating look into the mind of President Donald J. Trump. Despite its sometimes uncomfortable content, this audiobook remains an important historical document that provides an intimate look at one of America's most polarizing presidents. "

" If you're looking for a fascinating and informative look into the presidency of Donald Trump this is it. Spanning eight hours of interviews with Trump, Woodward brings us a vivid portrait of the 45th president that has both its positive and negative aspects (as is expected since we're talking about Trump after all). On one hand, The Trump Tapes provides an intimate view of President Trump as he deals with his own grievances and clings to the past. His demeanor throughout the conversation is candid and direct, yet at times shows his inability to comprehend the gravity of his responsibilities and address the real issues affecting us today. On the other hand, we also see a side of him that is engaging and entertaining, ever willing to act as a salesman for his presidency in order to win over Woodward. The Trump Tapes is an interesting audiobook that offers listeners insight into what it's like to have a conversation with President Trump. While it may not be suitable for everyone due to its language and content, it still presents an important historical document that allows us to reflect on the current state of the country during this time in history. " Bob Woodward's "The Trump Tapes" is an essential audiobook for anyone looking to gain a deeper insight into President Donald Trump's mindset, values, and opinions. It consists of over eight hours of conversations between Woodward and Trump himself, giving listeners a rare chance to hear the president in his own words. This remarkable treasure trove captures both the highs and lows of Trump's presidency as well as his thoughts on various topics, ranging from family to politics. Throughout the audiobook, Woodward provides an intimate portrait of Trump that is both captivating and revealing. The conversations are candid and frequently veer off course as Trump shares stories from his past, regales Woodward with anecdotes from his days in business or expresses strong opinions about those he perceives to be enemies or allies. The tone shifts depending on who he is talking about; at times it is respectful or even admiring but it often descends into anger or resentment when discussing rivals or adversaries. Aside from providing audiences with a unique perspective on the president, this audiobook also serves as a lesson in what can go wrong when somebody is given too much power without sufficient oversight. It offers a firsthand account of how one person can shape history while simultaneously underestimating their responsibility to act responsibly and fairly. Bob Woodward has brought us an enlightening listen that allows us to gain valuable insight into President Donald Trump – not only politically but also personally – while delivering thought-provoking commentary on leadership and accountability in modern times.
