From the author of Simplicity Parenting comes an elegantly simple and inspiring plan to help parents set limits, correct behavior, and influence a child’s decision-making by playing three specific roles: the Governor, of younger kids; the Gardener, who watches, listens, and decides on the right course of action for school-age children; and the Guide, who collaborates with increasingly mature teenagers. Quotes & Awards

  • “Narrating this solid parenting resource, Mel Foster captures both the helpful attitude and pleasing clarity of the author’s advice on parenting unruly children. His reasonable, optimistic tone and unfaltering diction will help neutralize the panic a lot of parents feel when their kids act out. The author provides a thoughtful framework for understanding children. He says kids of all ages often behave negatively because they’re disoriented—unsure of their family’s expectations and begging for structure. Using three basic parenting roles (governor, gardener, guide) for various stages of a child’s development, parents can stay connected with their offspring emotionally and implement the level of oversight most useful for each child. Foster delivers this satisfying package of insights and guidance with comforting equanimity. ”

  • “The Soul of Discipline offers practical tools for helping parents implement discipline that’s respectful and effective, but the book is so much more. Kim John Payne offers a framework to guide parents in making decisions about why, when, and how to hold tighter reins as we build skills in our children, and why, when, and how to loosen the reins as we scaffold freedom.”

Tina Payne Bryson, PhD, coauthor of No-Drama Discipline

  • “This book gets deep inside the challenge of getting along with children and teens and thinks deeply about what they need from us to become strong and self-managing. It elevates discipline to what it should be—a caring process of helping kids orient to the world and live in it happily and well.”

Steve Biddulph, author of The New Manhood
