Once he was a well-liked, well-paid young partner in a thriving Mississippi law firm. Then Patrick Lanigan stole $90 million from his own firm—and ran for his life. For four years, he evaded men who were rich and powerful, and who would stop at nothing to find him. Then, inevitably, on the edge of the Brazilian jungle, they finally tracked him down.

Now Patrick is coming home. And in the Mississippi city where it all began, an extraordinary trial is about to begin. As prosecutors circle like sharks, as Patrick’s lawyer prepares his defense, as Patrick’s lover prays for his deliverance and his former partners wait for their revenge, another story is about to emerge. Because Patrick Lanigan, the most reviled white-collar criminal of his time, knows something that no one else in the world knows. He knows the truth.

From the master of courtroom drama comes the ultimate in suspense—The Partner is John Grisham’s new spellbinding novel.

Listener Opinions

" 3 1/2 stars. Pretty typical Grisham. Scott hated the ending, but I thought it was its most redeeming feature. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Jeff Yoak | 2/11/2014

" There is really nothing wrong with this book. It is a fairly typical Grisham story. For some reason, I just couldn't get to caring. Usually I abandon books, when I do, somewhere between the 10% and 33% marks. I finished over two thirds of this one. I kept catching up on podcasts, which normally only happens between books. I was continually tempted to read something else short in the middle, or spend a drive listening to music. Grisham puts ones foot in front of the other as adeptly as always, and I may pick this up again someday, but at every point I just didn't care how the thing ends up. Finally I decided I'd rather just stop and read something else. That I can think of immediately, this is my least favorite of his books. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Corinna Carlson | 2/10/2014

" I would generally give a Grisham novel a 3 tops but this book was a page turner, I read it back in 1997 and I still remember almost all of it which is pretty odd for me. I have never understood why they have never made a movie out of this book. Of all the Grisham novels that I have read, this one is by far my favourite. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Tracie | 1/28/2014

" I wish I could say I loved this, but I really didn't. There are far too many people/lawyers involved, and it becomes rather difficult to remember who's whom. I did love the premise though, this clever guy steals a ton of money from other selfish, boorish, capitalist pigs and eventually gets away with it. I won't ruin the ending for anyone, but it was rather predictable. Oh well, on to my next Grisham novel for my Kindle. These novels are perfect for the Kindle! "

" I listened to this on CD as I have been running and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a great mystery that keeps tyou guessing to the very end. It is steeped in law and Brazil, so I figure Tyler will like it. I got sucked intothe story quickly and enjoyed finding bits of the answers as it went along. "

About the Author
Author John Grisham

John Grisham, whose name has become synonymous with the modern legal thriller, used to work sixty to seventy hours a week at a small Southaven, Mississippi, law practice, squeezing in time before going to the office and during courtroom recesses to work on his hobby—writing his first novel. When finally published, A Time to Kill met with little success, but when he sold the film rights to The Firm to Paramount Pictures, Grisham suddenly became a hot property among publishers. Spending forty-seven weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, The Firm became the bestselling novel of 1991. The successes of The Pelican Brief, which hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and The Client, which debuted at number one, confirmed Grisham’s reputation as the master of the legal thriller. His success even renewed interest in A Time to Kill, which was then republished. This time around, it was a bestseller. Since first publishing A Time to Kill in 1988, Grisham has written one novel a year, and all of them have become international bestsellers. There are currently over 275 million John Grisham books in print worldwide, which have been translated into forty languages. Nine of his novels have been turned into films, as was an original screenplay, The Gingerbread Man. He lives in Virginia and Mississippi.
