One warm night four children stood in front of a bakery. No one knew them. No one knew where they had come from.

Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny used to live alone in a boxcar, but now they live with their grandfather. This summer, they have decided to stay with Aunt Jane to help out a friend of hers at his general store.

It seems to the children that the young girl who works in the store, Nancy, is behaving very strangely. She seems nervous and won’t answer questions about her past. Then a strange man comes to the store asking about her. What secret is the mystery girl hiding?

Gertrude Chandler Warner (1890–1979) is best remembered as the author of the Boxcar Children mysteries. As a child, she spent hours watching trains near her home and often dreamed about what it would be like to live in a caboose or freight car. She lived in Putnam, Connecticut, until her death in 1979.
