From the author of The Horse Whisperer comes the phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller, an extraordinary new novel of love, family, and man's struggle with the wild. A pack of wolves makes a sudden savage return to the Rocky Mountain ranching town of Hope, Montana, where a century earlier they were slaughtered by the thousands. Biologist Helen Ross has come to Hope from the East, fleeing a life in shambles, determined to save the wolves from those who seek to destroy them. But an ancient hatred awaits her in Hope, a hatred that will tear a family and ultimately the community apart. And soon Helen is at the center of the storm, by loving the wrong man, by defying the wrong man . . . by daring to lead a town out of the violent darkness of its past. . . . "Good story about the conflict in Montana ranching country between the people who raise cattle for a living and the wolves who have been re-introduced back into the region. I liked this book a lot. Though it's a fictional story, it did a pretty good job describing the conflicts that have arisen in this part of the country regarding this topic. If I have a complaint, it's that Evans went out of his way to make the rancher morally and legally "the bad guy" here when in fact the problems go a little deeper than just "rancher bad", "bunny hugger" good. Wolves ARE a problem when they're feeding on cattle---costing the rancher hundreds of dollars a piece. I can understand the hatred the folks feel towards the wolves over this. And even more hatred against the government who in their view, caused the problem. Good story though. Well worth the time to read it."

" Wonderful story and beautifully written. Love, secrets, heartbreak, it's all here! "
— Kristie, 2/15/2014" This novel, from the same author as The Horse Whisperer, Nicholas Evans, is about a wolf biologist, a wolf pack, and a small town's fear and loathing of wolves. Evans builds characters who we side with and side against. Though it has been some time since I have read this book, one thing that still stands out in my mind are the characters. Helen Ross and Luke Calder (especially Luke, who I envisioned as a hot young rancher) are still fresh in my mind. For anyone who loves wolves, this novel is one you should not miss. "

— Kitty, 12/26/2013" This book ran a bit long and took too long at getting the story started. I'd skip the first 100 pages and start from there. Plus, I'm torn between thinking the relationship between the 29 year old woman and the 18 year old boy was either really sweet or incredibly creepy. "
— Janet, 12/24/2013" I also loved this book . You also learn about the animals and their lifestyles. Very interesting book. "
— Ann, 12/14/2013" Interesting concept, but could have been told in half the pages. "

— Corie, 6/19/2012" It was nice to see different attitude of people to nature. I liked the description of self-reflection of old hunter and perception of people and animals by young boy. "
— Coccinelle, 2/15/2012" It had the potential to be a great book....The tablature is very accurate. The only problem is that the TAB is handwritten, which can be very hard to read at points. You'd be better off picking up a newer, machine-printed tab book with the collection of Zeppelin hits. "

— Julie, 5/12/2011" Not for the faint of heart! Beautiful and horrible. "
— Kayla, 5/2/2011" Best book I have read recently about a wolf biologist in Montana who fights local ranchers to support reintroducing wolves into the mountains. Great character development and fascinating story. Worth reading! "
— Dick, 3/15/2011" Loved it!! Beautiful story. "
— Lynell, 3/8/2011" I stopped reading this not because the story isn't good, but because the writing isn't. Finally it became too irritating. "
