In The Passage and The Twelve, Justin Cronin brilliantly imagined the fall of civilization and humanity’s desperate fight to survive. Now all is quiet on the horizon—but does silence promise the nightmare’s end or the second coming of unspeakable darkness? At last, this bestselling epic races to its breathtaking finale.

The world we knew is gone. What world will rise in its place?

The Twelve have been destroyed and the hundred-year reign of darkness that descended upon the world has ended. The survivors are stepping outside their walls, determined to build society anew—and daring to dream of a hopeful future.

But far from them, in a dead metropolis, he waits: Zero. The First. Father of the Twelve. The anguish that shattered his human life haunts him, and the hatred spawned by his transformation burns bright. His fury will be quenched only when he destroys Amy—humanity’s only hope, the Girl from Nowhere who grew up to rise against him.

One last time light and dark will clash, and at last Amy and her friends will know their fate.

Quotes & Awards

  • “A thrilling finale to a trilogy that will stand as one of the great achievements in American fantasy fiction.”

Stephen King, #1 New York Times bestselling author

  • “Compulsively readable.”

    New York Times Book Review

  • “The City of Mirrors is poetry. Thrilling in every way it has to be, but poetry just the same…The writing is sumptuous, the language lovely, even when the action itself is dark and violent.”

    Huffington Post

  • “A true last stand that builds and comes with a bloody, roaring payoff you won’t see coming, then buildsagain to the big face off you’ve been waiting for.”

  • “Cronin skillfully manages a large cast of characters, all of whom he has endowed with fully developed personalities that engage the reader emotionally. Although its plot is understandably heavily dependent on events in the first two books, this novel is a superb capstone to a modern horror thriller epic.”

    Publishers Weekly (starred review)

  • “Cronin’s long-awaited finale to his epic post-apocalyptic trilogy is an edgy, page-turning fantastical tour de force. His world, displayed through brilliant, dystopic-tinted narrative lenses, is frighteningly familiar, mercilessly exhibiting the ingenuity, tenacity, and brutality of man. With love as his polestar, his humanization of Fanning/Zero and the masterful end are but a few things that make this an incredible, one-of-a-kind future classic.”

RT Book Reviews (5 Gold Stars, Top Pick!)

  • “This book plays to a number of Scott Brick’s strengths as a narrator—especially his prodigious ability to deliver detailed exposition as skillfully as he does fast-paced dialogue and action. He’s also expert at portraying the emotions of characters. As Fanning (Patient Zero) tells the story of how he was infected as a viral, Brick controls the suspense masterfully.”
