Publisher Description

Tim Rackley, a deputy U.S. marshal, watches helplessly as his daughter's killer walks free on a legal technicality. He is suddenly forced to explore his own deadly options -- a quest that leads him into the welcoming fold of "the Commission."

A vigilante group made up of people like himself -- relentless streetwise operators who have each lost a loved one to violent crime -- the Commission confronts the failings of a system that sets predators loose to hunt again, cleaning up society's "mistakes" covertly, efficiently, and permanently. But Rackley soon discovers that playing God is a fearsome task. When his new secret life starts coming unwound at an alarming speed, he is suddenly caught in the most terrifying struggle he has ever faced -- a desperate battle to save everything left that's worth fighting for.

"Gregg Hurwitz is a master of the thriller. The first in the Tim Rackley series, Kill Clause explores vigilantism, the law, justice and morality within the tight, tense constraints of the genre, all while its protagonist is learning to grieve for his murdered child. Top off a page-turning story with truly amazing writing and emotions so true you feel Hurwitz must have gone through something similar and you have the makings of a terrific book."

Quotes

  • “The Kill Clause is a buzzsaw spiral into the darkness of lawless men hiding within the law and the damage they do in the name of justice. Gregg Hurwitz perfectly realizes the gritty, hair-trigger world of the US Marshal’s elite Arrest Response Team with some of the most intense action scenes I have ever read, counter-pointed beautifully by the heart-wrenching story of a father’s horrifying loss. This book is the real deal.”

    — Robert Crais, #1 New York Times bestselling author
  • “A tough, engaging, and morally complex work that grabs you early and never lets you go. Hurwitz knows a cop’s world inside and out. Every page bristles with authenticity. I highly recommend it.”

    — Christopher Reich, New York Times bestselling author
  • “The Kill Clause is like a literary Law & Order, without the commercials. Bottom Line: Killer read.”

    — People
  • “A killer thriller, rich in both adrenaline-pumping action and thought-provoking issues of vigilantism, power, and the moral dilemmas of those sworn to uphold the law. Hurwitz’s prose is muscular yet intelligent; he draws characters well, and he unrolls action scenes with amazing vividness…[A] fine, intense, often un-put-downable tale.”

    — Amazon.com, editorial review
  • “[Hurwitz’s] fast-paced plotting will keep readers riveted. Tim is a promising series hero, with his multitude of skills and conflicted loyalties, and Hurwitz is off to a fine start with this first installment.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Few writers can so tightly structure a book…Hurwitz is already past the stage where he might patronizingly be compared with other masters of the genre. The Kill Clause demonstrates that it’s not too soon to start using him as a comparative touchstone.”
