Nate Overbay, a former soldier suffering from PTSD and ALS, goes to an eleventh-floor bank and climbs out the bathroom window onto the ledge, ready to end it all. But as he’s steeling himself to jump, a crew of gunmen bursts into the bank and begins viciously shooting employees and customers. With nothing to lose, Nate climbs back inside, confronts the robbers, and with his military training, starts taking them out, one by one. The last man standing leaves Nate with a cryptic warning: “He will make you pay in ways you can’t imagine.”
Soon enough, Nate learns what this means. He is kidnapped by Pavlo, a savage Ukrainian mobster and mastermind of the failed heist. Now blocked from getting into the bank vault to retrieve the critical item inside, Pavlo gives Nate a horrifying ultimatum: Either break in and acquire the item or watch Pavlo slowly kill the people Nate loves most - his estranged wife, Janie, and his teenaged daughter, Cielle. Nate lost them both when he came back from Iraq broken and confused. Now he’s got one chance to protect the people he loves, even if it’s the last thing he is able to do.

"I often check the last pages of a book ahead of time, just to make sure the character I have come to love survives. Also, that peek slows me down enough to enjoy the story with more attention to the skill of the author as he/she unfolds it. This book, however, already set me up for the loss of the main guy, and an appealing person he was. His death was already ordained, if not by himself, by his disease. And yet, it could not have been a more compelling story, impossible to put down, and an ending that was totally satisfying and surprising even knowing the fate of the hero. He was a heartwarming, very human hero too."

“Hurwitz can take a high-concept thriller and deliver the extras needed to elevate it further…[With] The Survivor, he outdoes himself.”
— Washington Post“In between tight, compelling action scenes, Hurwitz sensitively depicts Nate’s struggles…Thriller fans won’t let this one gather any dust on the nightstand.”
— Publishers Weekly“Hurwitz demonstrates his mastery of the thriller genre…The book opens as dramatically as a reader could hope for and doesn’t relent…[It] succeeds on every level.”
— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Surely Hurwitz can’t keep this up forever. Lately, each new book he publishes is his best so far, and this one’s no exception…It’s hard to imagine that he can top this one, but, based on past performance, don’t bet against it.”
— Booklist (starred review)“This book evokes a wide range of emotions, from horror at the shocking violence to sympathy for children whose parents are absent. The plot, characters, and their actions will keep you thinking for days. Adult and teen characters face impending danger with strength and grace as they consider what their lives—and deaths—are worth.”
— RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!)" A really well-written story. Good plot and pace. The story grabs you from page 1, and I love the descriptions the author creates. "
— Greg, 2/16/2014" Terrific book. Suspenseful. Gaps in credibility are made up by crisp great writing. Poignant. A story of pain and redemption. Evil antagonists. Comedy relief creatively played. Even a Rhodesia Ridgeback as an unlikely hero. For this genre, highly recommended. "
— Mike, 1/31/2014" Grabs you from the start I could not put this one down. "
— Malina, 1/27/2014" Excellent read Hurwitz is one accomplished thriller writer. "
— Michael, 1/24/2014" Good read, a little slow at times, but a good ending "
— Thomas, 1/20/2014" another great read by Hurwitz. Not only does the story grab you, but the main characters are heroic and yet tragic at the same time. A moving tale of a man's return to honor. "
— Bgrayyoung, 1/12/2014" Gregg Hurwitz is so gifted with keeping you in suspense the entire book--this is good vs. evil. There is a lot going on but so easy to follow and he doesn't fill the pages with unnecessary details you have to skim over. I cannot put his books down. He is my kind of writer. "
— Shirley, 12/29/2013" This is one of the best books I've read for 2012. Right off the hop, it had gripping suspense and there were a lot of twists that kept the pace interesting. "
— Ruben, 12/20/2013" If you like a good thriller where you're desperate to read the next page. Gregg Hurwitz is your man. Well written, excellent plot and characters. This is his latest and the first of his books I read. Currently working my way through his back catalogue. "
— Gary, 12/20/2013" Like many of the other reviews..I expected a great thriller- I was stunned at how very touching this book was as well- very recommended "
— Rick, 12/10/2013" Supercharged action keeps the adrenaline flowing in this well written thriller about an unlikely hero with ALS. "
— Anne, 12/9/2013" three stupid teen characters made this almost unreadable "
— Jane, 9/11/2013" I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. It was fantastic from front to back! "
— Kelly, 8/13/2013" Wow, this was fantastic. I've read a number of Hurwitz's other books, but this was outstanding. The protagonist is a flawed, broken and terminally ill man who sets out to commit suicide and instead finds the ultimate reason to remain alive. Absolutely could not put it down. "
— Deb, 2/8/2013" A war veteran, suffering from PTSD and soon to succumb to ALS, thwarts a bank robbery and finds himself in deep trouble with the gang who planned the heist. Imaginative plotting, but I never really cared for the hero or his trials and tribulations. It all seemed a little too formulaic. "
— Viccy, 2/2/2013" This was an excellent book. It is the first book I have read by this author, I may need to read him more often. Fast-paced, edgy, really kept me going til the last page was turned!! "
— Sheila, 1/27/2013" I didn't have high expectations other than a fun fast read. I really enjoyed this book! Fast paced, great characters, compelled thriller type story. If you are looking for a page turner thriller, this is a great one to pick. "
— Fswilson, 1/17/2013" I like a gruesome book every once in a while. "
— Edie, 12/28/2012" Fantastic roller-coaster ride of a thriller! Frightening gangsters, realistic family problems, the ups and downs of a flawed hero - all keep your attention and make you want to read through without stopping! "
— Gmomebb, 12/25/2012" This is an interesting take on what a survivor is. The PTSD takes a back seat to another more perplexing problem for the main protagonist. A quick read that really should be read more slowly. "
— Andy, 11/3/2012" Great pacing and very original kind story. I enjoyed it. "
— Rex, 9/30/2012" This is a nice, solid thriller with good character development and a tense, tight plot. Recommended for fans of David Baldacci. "
