America's best hitman was hired to kill--but when a D.C. government operation goes horribly wrong, he must rescue a teenage runaway and investigate her parents' murders in this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller.
It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn't seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable. He refuses to pull the trigger. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and is on the run.
Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a fourteen-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn't an ordinary runaway--her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can't walk away. He needs to help her. Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he's convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents' deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power.
Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl's life...and perhaps his own.

"Really liked it. I cared about the characters, although the the 14-year-old felt a bit forced, and it was a fast-paced page turner. Once again though, I knew who the guilty party was and was pretty certain who was behind the plot, long before the end of the book. There were still twists and turns that made it a fun read, but I wish the ending would have surprised me."

— The Huffington PostThe spine-chilling action begins on the first page and doesn't let up until the last...The Innocent is not just a scary read; this is heart-stopping stuff!
— BookReporter.com" I typically love an action mystery and this did the job. Nothing overly brilliant- and I also guessed the ending, but it was still good. "
— Tanya, 2/17/2014" not high literature but entertaining and intriguing. I liked all the main characters which is unusual.. I liked Will Robie, Julie and to a lesser degree Agent Vance. Interesting twist at the end. "
— Ruth, 2/11/2014" I haven't read one of David Baldacci's books in a while, but The Innocent is a great example of why I became a huge fan of his. The main character and the plot had me hooked from the beginning. I didn't want to put it down! "
— Tracy, 2/10/2014" Another excellent read! Love Baldacci!!! "
— Virginia, 2/1/2014" I listened to this book on a long road trip, and would have bailed after the first chapter if I had not been trapped in the car for hours. My first Baldacci book, I found the writing in The Innocent comically sophomoric. Really, I laughed out loud several times and found myself predicting the inane dialog aloud while hurtling down the highway. It was impossible to suspend disbelief listening to this over the top ridiculous plot and cartoonish characters. Clearly, many people love this book, but I just could not find a single reason to recommend this book to anyone for any reason. "
— Susan, 1/29/2014" Excellent characters, Baldacci knows how to weave his story! "
— Kim, 1/29/2014" I picked up this audiobook at the library on a whim, and it was exactly as I had predicted it would be. A spy thriller with decent suspense, plot twists and action. Nothing too terrible nor particularly remarkable, and a perfectly good listen while I was sitting at my sewing machine. I do have one complaint about the audiobook specifically: I hate when they use more than one reader, and in this case all the female lines were read by someone other than the male narrator. Ugh. "
— Sheila, 1/19/2014" Another gem from Baldacci - stayed up until 01300 on Friday night to finish this. "
— Stevan, 1/9/2014" Total Jack Reacher/ Elvis Cole type book - and I enjoyed it as usual "
— Kim, 1/5/2014" Excellent thriller. Well paced, good characters. Mostly believable. Interesting twists in the plot. "
— Steve, 12/22/2013" Good story although I thought the ending a little quick and confusing "
— Sharon, 11/17/2013" I flew through this. As with many thrillers, the scenario is a bit contrived if you think too much about it, but it's a quick-moving story with a conflicted protagonist and enough supporting cast to keep things interesting. In terms of pure entertainment, I think this is among Baldacci's best. "
— Charleen, 11/4/2013" A good page turner. Ending was a bit drawn out, but characters were believable. I would recommend it if you like this kind of genre. "
— Barbara, 10/28/2013" More like a 3.5, but couldn't quite stretch it to a 4. "
— Karen, 10/18/2013" Great book. Another good one with an unexpected ending!! A MUST read. "
— Krista, 9/2/2013" Easy, quick read. Enjoyed it though a convoluted series of events even for the super hero type. "
— MG, 7/19/2013" Twists and turns in the story that takes place in Washington DC. Robbie is a trained killer. He is sent on a mission and refuses to follow through on the kill classic Baldacci. "
— Patti, 6/10/2013" I thought it was a good read. Not too OTT but very TV or movie, not too complicated but it was interesting and I liked the characters. "
— Angela, 5/15/2013" Fun book for those into this type of action/adventure story. Listened to it on audiobook. "
— P.j., 4/30/2013" Good escapist fare. Good story. Recommended. "
— Rick, 4/17/2013" Great read, quick and a nice page turner. "
— Shikila, 3/22/2013" A scant three. Just an imitation Jack Reacher as far as I can tell, and not as interesting. "
— Gingerkat, 2/26/2013" Great escapist theme. Baldacci at his clever, twisty best!!!! "
— Mary, 1/14/2013" David Baldacci always writes an exciting, action packed book. I like his short chapters. Where the story takes place is familiar with most people and that is the Northern Virginia, DC area which enables you to vision it like watching a movie. "
— Marlyn, 10/21/2012" Just a light fun read, but well done. "
— Mary, 7/5/2012" Your typical Baldacci popcorn book. Ok story, but not memorable. "
