Plot Summary

Yes she is an Alchemist, and a human, but Sydney Sage has sworn to protect the secrets that lie between vampires and humans in order to keep peace between their worlds.

Though dedicated fully to her Alchemist teachings, she has experienced a moment of forbidden lust that has shaken her very beliefs. Once Marcus Finch comes along, this struggle to do the right thing may get more confusing. Marcus claims to know the ways of the Alchemists that are being kept from Sydney. He wants her to rebel against her teachers, and drawn to Marcus, Sydney is finding it very hard to break free from her past, and her very seductive present.

Indeed, Sydney knows there is something more dark and powerful in her, and she just might have to use it to protect the young witches around her, lest she be the next target!

Richelle Mead was born in 1976. She is a writer of fantasy romance and is best known for the Georgina Kincaid series, the Vampire Academy, and the Dark Swan series. Born in Michigan, she now resides in Washington state. Her degrees are in Comparative Religion and in Teaching. Though she began teaching eighth grade on the subjects of Social Studies and English, she always wrote in her free time, until her first novel Succubus Blues was published. Now a full time author, she has been able to write many subsequent novels.

"Sydney had a lot to deal with in this book! With re-discovering everything she's been taught, making her own decision to becoming her own person. Even though the ending left me helpless and wondering if now we'll be taking 10 steps back with Adrian, I'm trying to stay positive! Poor Adrian has been through so much with Rose and now with Sydney that I feel like he deserves his HEA asap! I was glad to see that Marcus wasn't a potential love interest for Sydney, but the new guardian for Jill surely will be in the way of her and Eddie! Looking forward to the next book."

Publisher Summary

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives. In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. " I've always loved all of Richelle meads novels, she has a way of drawing me in and this book did nothing to change this. I loved it! I was the main character, I was struggling with being an alchemist, I was falling in love with Adrian. Richelle is a powerful writer, I hope there are a lot more books in the series because you can be guaranteed to find me hiding in one! "
