Marine biologist and former secret operative Doc Ford is lazily poling his skiff along Southwest Florida's flat copper sea in search of sea anemones when he runs into the body of the most hated man on Sanibel Island—Marvin Rios.
And when the Island's simplest and sweetest resident is arrested for the murder, Doc heads straight into the heart of the sunshine state's dark side—to save his friend from being framed, and to save Sanibel Island from a rising tide of land-grab schemes, blood money, and violence.

"I gave this 4.25 stars. I really enjoy the Doc Ford books. We went to Pine Island and Sanibel Island, Florida, Doc Ford country, so of course I needed to read one while there! It was so interesting to actually see the setting for these books. As you can probably tell, I am a fan of character driven books. These do not disappoint. What a cast of interesting characters! White also includes a damn good mystery, action and suspense. The perfect package."

[White] continues to portray the world of mangrove swamp, gulf, hummock islands and tidal inlets with palpable description. The characters are deftly drawn and the villain is someone you'll love to hate."

— Rocky Mountain News“Politics and land development are pivotal elements in this taut, suspenseful tale as White makes the lure of the sea understandable to landlubbers and presents a panoramic view of southwest Florida.”
— Publishers Weekly" As always doc ford amazes and surprises. It shows vigilante justice and I appreciate the character development of Doc in this book. Very good beach read. I love DOC more with every book I read... "
— Kylie, 2/19/2014" Another pleasant Florida mystery. "
— Marcie, 2/19/2014" Nancy 5 stars; Ron 5 stars; library book "
— Nancy, 2/11/2014" I always like to find Doc in different situations and his knowledge od marine life. "
— Diana, 2/11/2014" Better than the first. Doc Ford finds a body and one of his friends - and least likely murderer - is arrested for the murder. This book at least stayed in Florida and followed the quirks of West Coast living. "
— Susan, 12/27/2013" Good Brain Candy, short read. "
— Phil, 12/27/2013" The Heat Islands (Doc Ford #2) by Randy Wayne White (St. Martin's Press 1992) finds Doc attempting to solve a murder for which a local fishing guide is accused. Doc's relationship with Dewey figure prominently in this story. My rating: 6/10, finished 8/28/12. "
— Dave, 12/24/2013" Most hated man on the island winds up dead. "
— Tom, 12/21/2013" My husband and I were engaged and married on Sanibel Island, so I love that these books are set there. Very entertaining and super fast reads. "
— Jennifer, 12/7/2013" Great book to listen to while exercising or working around the house! It's easy to follow the plot and the characters. Not great literature, but it's entertaining. "
— Susan, 12/4/2013" A good book, but not up to par with White's later work. In particular, the book ended too abruptly, and the ending was a little unsatisfying. "
— Ed, 11/26/2013" Wonderful descriptions of Florida and always a page-turner "
— Carol, 11/25/2013" Set on and around Sanibel Island, the descriptions of the setting were reason enough to read this mystery. Doc Ford is an interesting character and the mystery was suspenseful and satisfying. "
— Laura, 10/11/2013" Doc Ford and Tomlinson take on the bad guys once again. Great story! "
— Finzleft, 3/15/2013" I do so enjoy the Doc Ford series! This is another engaging mystery with two professional women tennis players as main characters and a truly skanky violent male and his collaborators who get what they deserve in the end. "
— Peg, 7/31/2012" Doc Ford does it again. Another vacation, another murder mystery solved. "
— Becky, 6/10/2012" More Sanibel intrigue from White's Doc Ford "
— columbialion, 3/6/2012" Great mystery! Second in the series. He is a good wrist who can describe the area of the story very accurately. "
— Brad, 12/31/2011" Like a trip to Fla with people you hope you never meet. I would read another book by him again I'm not sure if the Fl he describes is real but it feels real while being populated by charters who are clearly good or bad "
— Ken, 10/24/2011" I love this series and would recommend it to Floridians and fisherman. Great characters and humor, mixed with mystery and action. "
— Linda, 9/29/2011" An enjoyable, quick read. Not a lot of depth, but a great summer (or around the fireplace) read. When not in the mood for "heavy" reading, I really enjoy Randy White. "

— John, 3/10/2011" It's alright, after all was said and done, not much actually happens in this story. "
— James, 1/4/2011" I did not like this one as much as the first book. Still willing to read more. "
