Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr was a Confederation Marine's marine. She'd survived more deadly encounters—and kept more of her officers and enlistees alive—than anyone in the Corps, and she was determined to keep that record intact. But since her last mission, she'd been sidelined into endless briefings and debriefings with no end in sight. So, of course, she'd jumped at the chance to go to Crucible—the Marine Corps training planet—as a temporary aide to Major Svensson. The major had been reduced to little more than a brain and a spinal cord in his last combat, and he and his doctor were anxious to field-test his newly regrown body.
It should have been an easy twenty-day run. After all, Crucible was only set up to simulate battle situations so that recruits could be trained safely. But they were barely on-planet when someone started blasting the training scenarios to smithereens. Suddenly, Kerr found herself not only responsible for the major and his doctor but caught in a desperate fight to keep a platoon of Marine recruits alive until someone could discover what was happening on Crucible.

"This third volume in Huff's military adventures of Torin Kerr follows up on the situations set up in the previous two volumes quite satisfactorily. It somehow seemed much closer in tone and pacing to a good mystery novel than to traditional military science fiction, which was quite refreshing."
— Craig (4 out of 5 stars)
“The intriguing and well-designed aliens and intricate plotting keep the reader guessing.”
— Publishers Weekly" Fun, doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously science fiction though a bit too predictable for my taste. An enjoyable and easy read. "
— Luci, 1/15/2014" torin is sent back to the training grounds, but not everything is as it seems on crucible. a mystery with a twist. still PG-13. "

— Gemma, 10/21/2013" I love this series. I love Torin Kerr, and how she proves over and over that "by the book" means "know what you're doing." Leadership and teamwork, resourcefulness and loyalty and honor--that's how she wins, and I love watching her do it. "

— James, 7/20/2012" So far my favorite novel in the Valor series to date. These books continue to get better and better. "
— Sara, 11/19/2011" Great book. I love that the alien species Huff created are getting some depth, as is Torin Kerr. It's also nice that the story is being expanded beyond just Torin to include Craig Ryder and others. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the installment. "
— SixBeforeLunch, 10/15/2011" Same as first two CONFEDERATION novels: good military scifi but SLOPPY as far as typographical stuff. Yikes. "
— Ryan, 8/25/2011" I enjoyed it quite a bit. Can't wait to read the next book. "
— Zafia, 5/30/2011" Typical space-opera type, combat sci-fi. Nothing particularly special, but well-written with interesting characters.

I read her vampire stuff in junior high and high school, and I think this has a slightly different feel (although my memories of over ten years ago are pretty vague). "
— Jen, 5/6/2011" Torin Kerr in a deadly crucible "
— Helen, 3/31/2011" I love this series. I love Torin Kerr, and how she proves over and over that "by the book" means "know what you're doing." Leadership and teamwork, resourcefulness and loyalty and honor--that's how she wins, and I love watching her do it. "

— Kathy, 9/2/2010" I adore this series: light military science fiction with heart, humor, and a wonderfully strong, multi-faceted heroine. I love the way the author has further developed some of the non-Human races introduced in previous novels. Great fun! "
— Jenny, 11/18/2009" Fun, doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously science fiction though a bit too predictable for my taste. An enjoyable and easy read. "
