Former Marine gunnery sergeant Torin Kerr is attempting to build a new life with salvage operator Craig Ryder on his ship, the Promise. Turns out civilian life is a lot rougher than she'd imagined—salvage operators are losing both cargo and lives to pirates. And when they attack the Promise, Craig is taken prisoner and Torin is left for dead.
When Torin finds out why the pirates needed Craig, she calls in the Marines to get him back—and to stop the pirates from changing the balance of power in known space.

"Another great book by Tanya Huff in her Confederation series. Gunnery Sargent Torin Kerr was the same as she was in the first four books with some minor changes that just made her a better character. Anyone who has liked any of her previous Confederation novels should read this book too! Some of the characters from the previous books are Craig Ryder, of course, Mashona, Ressk and Werst. They were not as involved as in previous books but still very welcome. So grab this book and have a good time!"

" I'm a glutton for almost everything written by Tanya Huff, but combine her normal humor and world view with a butt kicking space marine, and it's a no brainer that I'm going to like it. "
— Barbara, 2/8/2014" Extremely good for what I think will be a middle book, probably because Torin is out of her element as she adjusts (or doesn't) to civilian life. Some of my favorite characters came back when she called, and I *knew* they were going to forget about Alamber, but it was still hilarious when Craig found him. "
— Mercurybard, 1/26/2014" One last adventure with Torin Kerr - she's out of the corps, but back into action to save her guy. "
— Cindywho, 1/17/2014" Another winner from Tanya Huff! Torrin Kerr is one of her best characters, and I hope there will be plenty more Valor books to come. "
— Timothy, 12/25/2013" Needed a little bit more tension over the resolution. Too much a case of competent character not really pushed to her limits in the novel. "
— Stephen, 12/24/2013" More of the same. still good but getting a little old. "
— Chas., 7/6/2013" Not as good as the last one, IMO. But still pretty dang awesome. The narrator does a really excellent job too. "
— Jill, 6/5/2013" The whole Valor series is excellent military SF, with a female protagonist. She is a true heroic type- honorable, brave, loyal, but in this book she is faced with a big change and a bigger challenge. Very enjoyable. "
— Tasula, 4/7/2013" This is fun. maybe not as much fun as it the first one or two but i am still a fan. "
— Marty, 2/15/2013" This excellent military sci-fi series continues with Book 5 - this time with space pirates! "
— Joseph, 11/21/2012" I really like(d) this series. If I'd had a sergeant like Kerr when I was in the Air Force, I'd probably still be there. "
— Lindig, 11/30/2011" This heroine is incredibly tough and the stories are very action oriented. Lots of fighting. Great universe and love the plastic aliens. "
— Theresa, 6/20/2011" Why do I want more? Because these are good books. "
— Nicole, 5/22/2011" like this fun series... "
— Sean, 5/11/2011" Torin continues to kick butt and never take no for an answer. "
— Lois, 4/26/2011" A great tale told with vigor, great aliens crafted so a biologist can appreciate them, and I'm sorry to finish Torin's story. "
— Nicole, 4/7/2011" I read it and needed to "set" the story back in my brain, so Immediately re-read the whole series all over again. Finished this book 2nd time 9/15/2010 "
— Susan, 2/1/2011" The whole Valor series is excellent military SF, with a female protagonist. She is a true heroic type- honorable, brave, loyal, but in this book she is faced with a big change and a bigger challenge. Very enjoyable. "
— Tasula, 1/8/2011" I'm a glutton for almost everything written by Tanya Huff, but combine her normal humor and world view with a butt kicking space marine, and it's a no brainer that I'm going to like it. "
— Barbara, 11/13/2010" I really liked the previous Valor books, but this wasn't nearly as good. This story does seem to be a transitional one for Torin and I look forward to the next book and a return to her kicking butt. "
— Lori, 9/29/2010" Good read as always. Better than the last book. "
