"It got me hooked on Monk and friends. What a change from modern mysteries/police dramas. The insight into period detail and how it relates to police investigation was nice, but I have found Perry is just a really good story teller. I've read all the Monk books the local library has... "

“Richly textured with the sights and sounds of London and its countryside…Solidly absorbing and Perry’s best to date.”
— Kirkus Reviews" Can you imagine waking up and not knowing who you are? Fortunately, William Monk is a detective so he can find out; unfortunately, he doesn't really like the "self" he finds. "
— April , 11/23/2018" I really enjoyed this Victorian Mystery. I found the crime solving methods to be unique without modern transportation, telephones and so many conveniences of the current day. I want to read the whole series! "
— Sherry, 1/25/2014" Belongs to the Monk series. "
— Lily, 1/23/2014" Not as good as her Charlotte/Pitt series, but still a winner. Perry shows the unique standing of policemen within Victorian Society where they are not accepted by any of the classes, but have become a class unto themselves with their own divisions within- as can be seen with Monk. Great murder mysteries that give insight into social divisions of Great Britain! "
— Chelsee, 1/16/2014" It's the 1800's. Mr. Monk wakes up in a hospital. He has no idea who he is, where he is or anything. He was in an accident and obviously has amnesia. He soon finds out though that he is a police detective and as he slowly learns who he is, he must also find out who killed Josceline Gray. "
— Jessi, 1/14/2014" A gripping mystery tinged with freaky yet authentic Victorian-era social norms, this book ultimately lost me because I guessed the whodunit too quickly. Still, the subplots were very intriguing! "
— Jenny, 12/13/2013" Fun read, lots of plot twists and turns. Just when you thought you know 'who done it' the plot leads you in another direction. Audio version very good. "
— Georganne, 11/28/2013" Will definitely read the next book in the series "
— Devin, 11/9/2013" Author's own bio is even more fascinating. "
— Cdoming3, 11/5/2013" I love this series and Anne Perry is such an interesting person. "
— Erin, 9/2/2013" Pretty light read. Interesting morality questions. Looking forward to the next book in the series. "
— Shemsi, 8/1/2013" Read for Evening Edition 3/2003 "
— Debbie, 7/19/2013" Very good. I liked it very much. I gave it 4 stars but would have liked giving a 4 1/2 stars. "
— Delene, 7/18/2013" It was a clever idea to have a detective who ends up with amnesia. However, it was frustrating because as he learned about his past, he made know attempt to change his future. "
— Keri, 6/27/2013" This was a really fun change of pace/genre for me. I was glad Sue lent it to me a while ago - I needed something different. I thought I had it all figured out, but it surprised me in the end. "
— Kelley, 1/24/2013" Always. Like her books Such a novel approach to mystery. Richer than Agatha Christie. "
— Lynn, 1/12/2012" Nice intro to the series. "
— Mike, 8/20/2011" In this book the detective has amnesia and has to learn his own identity as he solves the case. It is such an interesting twist on the classic sherlock holmes style murder mystery. Give it a try! "
— Regina, 10/20/2010" The story was different and it kept your interest. Anne Perry is a good historical mysteries writer. She made you feel that you were there with Monk in all the places (especially London). It was a great story! "
— Ann, 7/6/2010" This Victorian mystery is one of several featuring a private investigator who has lost his memory following an injury. No one seems to like him for reasons he can't remember. Perry is skilled at psychology and character development. "
— Veronica, 4/23/2009" This was an OK mystery but a little slow. It took a long time to resolve. Since it took place in England many years ago, it was interesting to see what their perception of policement was. It is about a policeman who is in an accident and loses his memory and fears he has killed someone. "
