The writings of Josephus contain one of the few historical accounts of the wars of the Jews and the destruction of Jerusalem during the Roman occupation of Palestine in 70 A.D. Born in Jerusalem in 37 A.D. and raised in both the Hellenic and Jewish traditions, Josephus spent his life trying to accommodate his admiration for the Romans with his loyalty to his Jewish heritage. Josephus was a priest who served as a general in the Jewish army during a revolt against the Romans, and a mediator whose attempt to find accommodation between the Jews and the Romans in Palestine led the Jews to consider him a traitor. His historical work, The Wars of the Jews, which was published in 75 A.D., is one of the few historical accounts of the Roman army, the city's temple and fortifications, the sack of the temple, and the siege of Masada. " Holy fucking shit. Months of siege, mind-boggling cruelty and misery — fire, starvation, dismemberment, cannibalism. In the end (warming: spoiler alert) — yes, catastrophe. Fucking hell. "

" This is quite a story of real life events by an eyewitness.

Tho book has has some of the most powerful writing about events to be found anywhere.

The author was there at Masada. "

" It's about the destruction of Jerusalem around AD 70. If you want to know what the abomination of desolation is all about, read it. But beware... "

" It is interesting to see the 'New Testament' history is missing from real 1st century reports.... "

" I've listened the first half of this book. Josephus is an excellent historian of the inter-Testamentary period and the early Roman period of the Jewish people and lands. If you're interested in what led up to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, this is the book to read. "

" great book of how again another country got sick of the jews and kicked thier ass in a war, but at least Rome was one of the first to do it... "

" It was a hard read, I must admit it, but it was a fascinating read, too. I don't like Josephus' personal history but when he's the only one to have recorded the falling of the Second Temple, you have to read it. I highly recommend this book to buffs of the era. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 TJ | 11/24/2007

" This book is so boring...it reads like the old testament but set in the first century AD...it is an interesting read if you are into the history of christianity or judaism. "
