No one knows the dark side of “The Street” better than master storyteller Stephen Frey, author of such riveting novels as Shadow Account and The Day Trader. Now, in his most ambitious work to date, Frey proves that no writer can put a high-powered hero at greater risk, nor offer readers more thrilling rewards. A towering legend among New York private equity partnerships, Everest Capital is aptly named. When its founder meets an untimely death, thirty-six-year-old superstar Christian Gillette gets the top job. But with the power and prestige come risks. The day he narrowly escapes a fiery explosion that consumes his limo and takes two innocent lives, Gillette instantly understands how intense those risks are. It comes as no surprise to him that he has enemies in the world of multibillion—dollar deals. But now that he controls Everest, he’s not going to let those enemies keep him from taking the firm–and himself–to even greater heights. Gillette has never hesitated to be aggressive, even ruthless, in his pursuit of success. This time will be no exception. But in order to forge the alliances necessary to achieve his goals, Gillette forsakes a cardinal rule: Never trust anyone. The only certainties are the insidious campaign of corporate sabotage that could cost Gillette his job and the relentless assassination attempts that could cost him his life. To break a deadly conspiracy of greed, he’ll be forced to walk–then run–an ever-blurring line between loyalty and betrayal, attack and retreat, survival and destruction . . . in the ultimate game of profit and loss. With The Chairman, Stephen Frey presides with intensified skill over the market he has so dramatically cornered–sharpening his patented brand of hard-boiled high-finance intrigue to its keenest cutting edge yet.

"This was a great book, filled with intrigue and the corporate world. What's not to love about corrupt CEOs? I actually picked this book up by mistake trying to get one from James Frey (That con artist). I'm glad to have made the mistake!"

" If you like books about wall street and insider trading then this is the book for you. Very well written. I enjoy all of Stephen Frey's books and I think this one is his best. "
— Joe, 1/18/2014" Christian Gillette becomes the new chairman of private equity firm after the mysterious death of its founder. After several attempts on his life fail, a plot to remove him to take over the company is unveiled. This was good mystery-murder read, even though I had to suspend judgment on the ruthless capitalistic assumptions underlying it. "
— Drick, 12/19/2013" Very entertaining, and very little profanity (which surprised me.) Reads like a Finder novel. "
— Becky, 11/30/2013" A solid thriller. Took a little bit, but sucked me in. Many of the characters were a little too stereotypical; from central casting for wall st types. Many characterize Frey as Grisham for finance. Dead on. I really liked Stiles, the security guy. The main character could have been more heroic in my view. Still, it was fun and I'm sure I'll read more Frey in future--though I am in no rush. "
— Shawn, 11/26/2013" As if I needed any more reasons to despise financial corporations and the people who run them. "
— Lynn, 11/14/2013" Good writing, not the worst plot but pretty easy to figure out who the real antagonist is. If you're a Grisham fan, you'll probably like Frey's books. "
— Entropybar, 10/14/2013" This is one of his best novels. It is well written and full of excitement. A solid 9 of 10 stars! "
— Tim, 10/12/2013" Good thriller. The twists and turns were very sharp and filled with surprises. "
— Rajesh, 10/4/2013" Nothing! Fun to read though. "
— Mason, 9/25/2013" An OK book. Well written. High finance just doesn't float my boat. "
— Lilly-Anne, 8/10/2013" This was my first book by Stephen Frey. It was one of those books that keep you guessing throughout. I really enjoyed listening to this one. "
— Pam, 4/7/2013" Chairman - Protege - Power Broker - Successor. In this order, follow the career of Christian Gillette through these four novels. The best is the Chairman and then the rest are a blur, but some were better than others. "
— Alison, 11/3/2012" Very action packed and kept me interested through out the entire book. "
— Anne, 8/10/2011" This was my second read of this book. It is interesting but lacks the turns and twists of a good thriller. Still an enjoyable quick read. "
— Abdul, 10/4/2010" Brilliant! A must for every financial professional; investor/banker. Characters are so real and learning just fab!! "
— Ruchi, 3/13/2010" This was a great read - read over 2 evenings - very hard to put down. First Frey book I've read, and will definitely read another one. "
— Donna, 1/31/2009" I am so glad my life didn't lead me into the world of high finance and the dog eat dog world that is depicted in this book. "
— Annette, 12/10/2008" A bit over the top, but captivating. Hard to imagine a chairman getting surrounded by so much death and betrayal, and having to shoot his way out of the mess. But still fun to listen to. "
— Kendar88, 1/27/2008" I just loved it. This fast paced thriller gives you an adrenaline rush. "
— Projection, 5/31/2007" Not one of my favorites. There are other Stephen Frey books that are better. This felt the most contrived and the main character is unsympathetic although the author attempts to make him "likeable." "
— Gay, 1/28/2007" Actually started this series with the Protege, but it was great. Had me wanting more. Suspenseful and exciting. Christian Gillette is full of intelligence and charm. "
— Desiree, 3/17/2006" I'm not sure why I was determined to try another Stephen Frey book, but I didn't like this much better than the other one I read. "
— Marijke, 1/5/2006" weird . . . intriguing. . . cut-throat killing :-( "
— Dorothy, 6/2/2005" Everyone should read one or two of Frey's book, if more than two spread them out over several years as sort of repetative, but different "
