Although she has been raised by her father, 16-year-old Ginny has always felt a bond with her mother, a Haitian painter whom she has never known. Like her mother, Ginny is a talented and passionate artist. As the only mixed-race teen in a small Welsh village, Ginny hasn't always had an easy life, but her love for art has always helped her get along. Then her world is turned upside down. First she learns that she has a white half brother, the child of her father's first marriage. Then she uncovers some startling news about her mother. Suddenly, her whole life seems like a lie. Desperate and confused, Ginny sets off on an urgent quest to find the truth about her past - and lay claim to her true identity.

" A brilliant book what more can I say. It is very different from his Dark Materials Trilogy. "

" Because my husband and daughter are reading Pullman's The Golden Compass for the first time, I decided to look up some of his other stuff. Didn't get very far, unfortunately. This book might have worked for me in another frame of mind but I was sorely disappointed in its lack of motion. It just drifts along a bit aimlessly--not enough conflict and tension early enough to really get me hooked. Plus I checked out his edited volume of Grimm's fairy tales and his notes at the end of each story are LAME. I think I will just stick to his Dark Materials trilogy unless anyone can persuade me otherwise. "

" Snoozeville... The writing style was just bland. I prefer Phillip Pullman's other books. But overall, this book was alright. "

" Not bad, but weird. It starts off as one sort of story and rapidly becomes a bit of a soap opera. Also, I don't get why the main character doesn't just ask her dad if she's adopted or not. If I heard rumors that I was adopted, I'd ask my dad right away, and we're not even particularly close. "

" This was different from the few Philip Pullman things I've read. It's not often you find an author that can write amazingly in any genre, but Philip Pullman has pulled it off! I really enjoyed this because of, well, everything in it. It was just a great read. "
