Quotes & Awards

  • “Mirroring a slice of actual railway history, the Boundless is a train of epic proportion, an eccentric visionary’s dream made real by the sweat and lives of many…Along with his friend Maren, an escape artist with the traveling circus onboard, Will realizes untapped bravery, loyalty, and friendship that help him face a multitude of dangers. The Boundless successfully mixes history, folklore, and imagination into a sweeping adventure story that is a delight to read.”, editorial review

  • “Dangers both natural and supernatural abound, as well as a certain amount of social commentary regarding class and ethnicity. Oppel’s imagination and sense of adventure never disappoint, and readers should thrill to this rousing tale as it barrels ahead at full speed.”

    Publishers Weekly (starred review)

  • “With its imaginative plot, cast of colorful, well-rounded characters, and nonstop action, Oppel’s latest is a delight to read from the first page right through the satisfying conclusion.”

    Library Journal (starred review)

  • “This vividly imagined, present-tense narrative features a series of heart-stopping action scenes involving dozens of memorable characters, many of them introduced in the 1885 segment and revealing themselves more fully aboard the Boundless. An epic journey novel with a distinctive setting, a powerful sense of adventure, and just a whiff of steampunk.”

    Booklist (starred review)

  • “Canadian railway history, fantasy, a flutter of romance—and a thoughtful examination of social injustice—collide in this entertaining swashbuckler from the author of Printz Honor–winning Airborn.”

    Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

  • “Nick Podehl’s enthusiasm and flair sweep listeners off on a marvelous audio adventure across Canada on the Boundless, the longest train in the world…Podehl aptly voices a brave and conflicted teenager who is determined to do the right thing. As narrator, he is a marvel at creating about a zillion characters ranging from ‘colony-class’ poor folks to first-class rich, including grasping merchants, growling brakemen, Chinese workers, and even a roaring Sasquatch. Perhaps best and most mysterious is the Métis ringmaster, Mr. Dorian, slightly exotic and measured in tone, although angered by the cultural discrimination he faces on a daily basis. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.”

  • “Once again, Oppel proves himself to be one of the premier writers of action and adventure for a middle-grade audience.”

    Horn Book

  • “Oppel’s imagination and sense of wonder bring this story to life, making it an unusual take on childhood dreams of adventure and one wild ride.”

    Shelf Awareness

  • “This middle-grade book has a little something for everyone: adventure, mystery, fantasy, and romance…Oppel ties everything together in a way that will grab young readers and keep them hooked until the end. Recommended.”

    Library Media Connection

  • Winner of an AudioFile Earphones Award
  • An Amazon Best Book of the Month for Children, April 2014
