The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax is the second novel featuring Mrs. Pollifax and was published in 1970. Mrs. Pollifax is a senior citizen living a sedate life in New Brunswick, NJ. However, in the first book, The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax, she finds things unbearably slow and sends in an application to the CIA to become a spy. Out of a number of applications, hers is chosen by a Mr. Carstairs who becomes her handler. He sends her on a mission that is supposed to be really simple but turns into a complicated affair.

After this first adventure, Mrs. Pollifax doesn't really expect the CIA to call her again. But, when Mr. Carstairs contacts her and asks for her help for a mission in Turkey, she recklessly agrees. Her job is to get in touch with a spy who is defecting from the Soviet Union and give her the necessary papers to enable her to come to the US. So far, so good. However, knowing what happened the last time, Mr. Carstairs thinks it would be best if Mrs. Pollifax had a bodyguard, and he assigns her one. They duo get to Turkey to find that the quarry has fled and Mrs. Pollifax is left unprotected when her shadow is murdered.

Now, she must use all her wits to complete her mission in the face of the Turkish police, spies from other countries and assassins. Since the woman Mrs. Pollifax is supposed to rescue has valuable information, there are a number of people who want to get their hands on her. Fortunately, Mrs. Pollifax saves the day along with a young man she has taken an interest in, named Colin.

This is a funny, quirky book that will keep you rooting for Mrs. Pollifax from beginning to end. If you enjoy Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series, featuring a sharp old lady, you'll love Mrs. Pollifax with her blustering good humor and her knowledge of human nature.

Dorothy Gilman was born in New Brunswick, NJ, the daughter of a minister. She married a teacher named Edgar A. Butters and divorced him twenty years later. The couple had two children, Christopher and Jonathan, and two grandchildren. Gilman decided to become an author when she was quite young and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She published several stand-alone novels, the Mrs. Pollifax series, as well books for younger readers. The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax has been made into two TV movies, one starring Rosalind Russell and the other starring Angela Lansbury.

Emily Pollifax is one of a precious few gray-haired female sleuths who solve their cases through unflagging determination, moral courage and wisdom that comes with age. In The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax, Emily answers the call of that nice Mr. Carstairs to go to Istanbul as a courier and search for a missing agent.

" Fun little dated cold-war spy novel. Elderly widow in a flowered hat somehow ends up working for the CIA, befriends a lot of people, gets out of numerous scrapes. Cute if fluffy. "
