For Dr. David Beck, the loss was shattering. And every day for the past eight years, he has relived the horror of what happened. The gleaming lake. The pale moonlight. The piercing screams. The night his wife was taken. The last night he saw her alive.
Everyone tells him it's time to move on, to forget the past once and for all. But for David Beck, there can be no closure. A message has appeared on his computer, a phrase only he and his dead wife know. Suddenly Beck is taunted with the impossible -- that somewhere, somehow, Elizabeth is alive.
Beck has been warned to tell no one. And he doesn't. Instead, he runs from the people he trusts the most, plunging headlong into a search for the shadowy figure whose messages hold out a desperate hope.
But already Beck is being hunted down. He's headed straight into the heart of a dark and deadly secret -- and someone intends to stop him before he gets there.

"Wow - If I could give half stars I think I would give 4 1/2. This story kept you on edge and had me guessing right up until the end - and then even the ending threw a small twist in it; I think the only reason I stopped at 4 stars (or 4 1/2) is because of some small things about the book. For example, its the main character, David, speaking in first person narrative; but then some chapters of the book switch to third person narrative and tell about other aspects of the story that David is not aware of yet; while, for me, this didn't take away from the suspense or appeal of the novel, it may bother some readers; also another factor I found, was that it was full of plots; there was alot of things going on in and around the main story that some might find it too busy. Overall, though, I really enjoyed this book. Which surprised me, actually. I read it "just because"..for something to read, for the sake of reading! But it took me by surprise and I found it difficult to put down! I may read another book by Harlan Coben."
— Nicole (4 out of 5 stars)
Suspense at its finest...
— Jeffrey DeaverA can’t-put-it-down page-turner...
— Lisa ScottolineNon-stop action with plot twists galore...
— Phillip MargolinA thriller of runaway tension...
— Iris Johansen" Another excellent suspense/mystery from Harlan Coben. It is a stand-alone, but a few minor characters are repeated from his other books. I love his books. He is probably my favorite author, and for that reason, I haven't quite read all of his books yet, as I don't want to get caught up and have to wait for his new released! "
— Julie, 2/18/2014" This novel kept me reading till the wee hours of the morning, constantly guessing the outcome. There is definitely some pretty good intrigue contained in these pages about a dead woman whose husband was also beaten and left for dead, and the sudden and weirdly unexpected messages David received on his computer 8 years later. Harlan Coben will probably never win any literary awards, but he certainly delivers as far as the plot is concerned. "
— Ida, 2/18/2014" I loved this book! It's fast paced and filled with suspense from start to finish. Really a must read!! "
— Heidi, 2/13/2014" 5-Star up until the last few paragraphs. I couldn't stop the eye-roll. But the rest is excellent. "
— Donna, 2/6/2014" Intense, fast-paced, intriguing. I am not usually one for thrillers, but I enjoyed the quick paced storyline. I felt on the edge of my seat nearly the entire book. I was trying to figure out the ending as I went along and was glad that I couldn't figure it out. That made the story more fun. I will watch the movie now and compare. I'll try another quick suspense and see if I like it as much as this one. One of my professors suggested this as a crowd favorite. I understand why now. Thanks Becky!! "
— Jean, 1/30/2014" Loved it. Read it a long time ago, but a real page turner that had so many twists and unexpected turns, kept you guessing! "
— Kellie, 1/27/2014" Only reason this book did not get five stars was because of the author's writing style of switching from the first person to the third every other chapter. Otherwise an amazing read! "
— Nicko, 1/26/2014" This is the book that I first lend to non-readers. They bring it back and are hooked and on fire to read! Coben is one of my absolute favorite authors. "
— Troi, 1/15/2014" Harlan Coben = one of my favorite authors. Quick, fast-paced, entertaining reads. Don't require an abundance of brain cells. "
— Earlene, 1/14/2014" It was an easy read, fast paced thriller. As for the story itself, i did not like the last twist thrown in at very end...it was just too much! There was enough twists in the story as it was. But i would recommend it "
— Kelly, 1/6/2014" Wow, wow, wow!!! Finally, a thriller with at least a few of the characters who are likable. Very easy for me to relax to David Beck (although I've never fired a gun before). "
— Erik, 12/28/2013" This book is brilliant. I saw the film in French about three years ago and that was brilliant too. I just can not put down this book a great read that keeps you on the edge. "
— Ian, 12/25/2013" Fast paced and packed with enough twists to keep one glued to the book. On the flip side, more than a bit implausible. "
— Janet, 11/28/2013" Best mystery/thriller I have ever read. One of my all-time favorite books! "
— Christina, 11/27/2013" This book has enough plot twists to curl your hair. It is one of the few mysteries I've read where the ending was a complete surprise. Enjoy the wild ride! "
— Penny, 11/25/2013" I loved this story. It had enough action to keep me going. I thought this was a Bolitar Series that Coban writes. I loved this one even better. Hope to find more like this. Highly recommend if you like action suspense. "
— Mary, 9/12/2013" A book keeps you reading till the end! Great thriller!! "
— Alfred, 8/13/2013" I really loved this book! Lots of suspense, a few twists, and a killer ending. This is my first Coben book, and I'm hooked. "
— Mikesawin, 6/17/2013" One of my all time favorite authors. I haven't read a book of his that I didn't love. "
— Eileen, 6/12/2013" Very intense, unpredictable, and entertaining read. Very well written. "
— Karla, 6/4/2013" Another good Coben book. This one I managed to actually figure part of it out before getting to the end; but there were still some surprises. "
— Brad, 4/1/2013" A thorough-going page-turner, for sure, but I confess I felt manipulated and a little peeved by the book's major turn. It didn't fall right with me. "
— Dana, 3/24/2013" One of the best mystery novel's i have ever read. "
— John, 2/6/2013" Fast pace- good tale. Enjoyable! Was made into a movie in France. My first Coben book. "
— Mike, 12/27/2012" Excellent plot... i couldn't keep the book down until i finish it.. But the last page, and the last confession... i was a bit irritated!! "
— Vimal, 9/4/2012" Mystery. I don't do a lot of mysteries, but this one really had me gripped from the beginning - probably because it also involved a love story. Definitely one to read ... "
— Stephanie, 8/14/2012" A great Thriller. It keeps you on the edge until the very end. "
— Doron, 4/14/2012" Quite engrossing... but quite obvious. "
— Parvathy, 4/1/2012" I like this author, Dr Beck's story is a page turner, with lots of twists and turns. Coben always has his protagonist with a strong side kick, and Tyrese fulfils the role, not quite Win, but he does help the story along. "
— Teryl, 1/20/2012" I like how he writes. Yes, its mass market - but an enjoyable read. The mystery and plot turns are good but its his character descriptions which seem to draw me in. "
— Virginia, 1/11/2012" Really a 2.5. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. It was meh. O well. "
— Amma, 7/17/2011" I brought this book. I would definately read more of Harlan Coben's books. Awesome writing. Awesome storyline. 5 stars outta 5 ! "
— Amanda, 5/23/2011" j'ai beaucoup aimé, on rentre de suite dans l'histoire à essayer de comprendre ce qu'il se passe, se qu'il s'est passé, si c'est un espoir ou la réalité et on se laisse porter par le recit. "
— Melliane, 5/21/2011" Very well written, great plot, lots of suspense and action. The author really developes this story efficiently and keeps you right on the edge of your seat. "
— Mary, 5/16/2011" Loved most everything by Coben "
— Shelby, 5/16/2011" I so want to flip ahead just to know what going to happen next. Definitely a home book. I have lost myself in it. "
— 'chris, 5/14/2011" GREAT BOOK! I love how his mysteries keep you going right until the very end. "
— Jennifer, 5/14/2011" Gripping story with some really inhuman characters, but a somewhat unbelievable plot that needed a number of unlikely threads to pull it together. Still a good read. "
— Ellen, 5/5/2011" You often read that a book's "unputdownable." 99.9% of the times it's not true. This is the 0.1% exception. A riveting read from start to finish. I'll be surprised if someone's not already working on the screenplay. "
— Leslie, 4/30/2011" Enjoyable thriller, a bit of a messy ending. The movie version was better. "
