On Spain’s Costa Brava, passion and intrigue are everywhere – especially in the hearts of those who dwell there. As the dictator Franco teeters on the edge of death – a death that will completely overturn the political structure of Spain – two couples are entwined. One, a husband and wife bored with the existence they have drifted into. The other, a passionate, combative pair who relish every moment of life. Into this potent mix a young American arrives, seeking his missing lover – bringing a shadow of danger into the machinations already at work. Soon the political tension in the country reaches the breaking point, and that danger becomes an all-too-stark reality…as a heartrending misunderstanding unravels the fragile bonds of love and loyalty, and leads to a tragedy that will forever change the lives of everyone it touches. “A terrific yarn spinner.” – Chicago Sun-Times “Lescroart’s a pro.” – Jonathan Kellerman Download and start listening now!

" I'll try the paper version because I like Lescroart so much and I'd love to read one of his earlier books, but as an audiobook, it dragged. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Elsie | 9/29/2013

" This is Lescroart's first book and it is a good thing that we didn't read it first or we would never have read any of the others. Very shallow with virtually no plot. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Jeanne | 7/11/2013

" This is John Lescroart's first book and I'm glad it wasn't the first of his books I'd read because I didn't think this was very good. It reminded me of The Great Gatsby which I didn't like. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Scott | 6/1/2013

" Wow, worst effort ever by Lescrart. I read pretty much everything he writes and this missed the mark big time. "

" Started slow, got better. Seems Lescroart was trying to be a new Hemmingway when he started out. I enjoyed it, although it was a little strange. "

" I thought this was going to be a murder mystery for some reason, but it wasn't . Well written though. Good characters that I enjoyed following. Quick, easy read. "

" This is a very different book than what we are used to from the author. And it is his first novel. It is an adult tragedy/coming of age story. Overall, not bad! "

" It was okay, but I prefer his usual cast of characters--Dismas, Franny, Abe, etc. It was somewhat interesting, with some twists and turns, but on the whole rather down and morose. The characters were well portrayed, but in a place that could have been a paradise, the people were mostly unhappy. "

" Basic novel. I enjoyed the Spainish setting, but other than that nothing really jumped out to make this a great read. "
