The Curtlees are a powerful force in San Francisco, unscrupulous billionaires who’ve lined every important pocket in the Bay Area in pursuit of their own ascent. So when the family’s heir, Ro Curtlee, was convicted of rape and murder a decade ago, the fallout for those who helped to bring him to justice was swift and uncompromising. The jury foreman was fired from his job and blacklisted in his industry. The lead prosecutor was pushed off the fast track, her dreams of becoming district attorney dashed. And head homicide detective Abe Glitsky was reassigned to the police department’s payroll office. Eventually, all three were able to rebuild their lives.
And then Ro Curtlee’s lawyers won him a retrial, and he was released from jail.
Within twenty-four hours, a fire destroys the home of the original trial’s star witness, her abused remains discovered in the ruins. When a second fire claims a participant in the case, Abe is convinced: Ro is out for revenge. But with no hard evidence and an on-the-take media eager to vilify anyone who challenges Ro, can Abe stop the violence before he finds himself in its crosshairs? How much more can he sacrifice to put Ro back behind bars?

"Lescroart is high in the pantheon of mystery writers that I read, Being a traditionalist, I was a little hesitant to read this because Dismas Hardy, Lescroart's usual lead character, makes only a few brief cameos in this book - what a mistake it would have been to miss this. You've got the regular characters of Abe Glitzky and Wes Farrell. Ro Curtlee is a truly nefarious villain and Lescroart is not hesitant to kill off a number of people including good guys. There's a subplot that adds to the enjoyment and the book is absolutely gripping. Awesome!"

" New district attorney has to deal with just released rapist/murderer, out of jail until his retrial because of rich parents/connections. Immediately witnesses start dying, but with no evidence to send him back to jail. I didn't really go for this. Police, DA, assistant DA, mayor are all incompetent or owned by the wealthy family. Saw the twist at the end from a mile away. Maybe 2 1/2 stars. Maybe. Too much bad language. "
— Bruce, 2/8/2014" Couldn't put it down. I finished it within a few days. He is always a good read, and I wasn't disappointed. "
— Tracy, 2/6/2014" the plot and twist and turns were quite good and the characters also were very interesting. if you like mystery and who dunnits this is one i recomend this is probably between a 3 1/2 and 4 star book "
— Peter, 2/1/2014" Rather a strange plot twist that didn't make much sense. It was OK. "
— Kathleele, 1/26/2014" Very good book! It was comforting to visit again Abe Glitsky, Dismas Hardy, and Wes Farrell. Intriguing plot. Dealt more with the out fall of a criminal's actions. "
— Marianne, 1/21/2014" I love love love this series of books. They feel like real people and I love the location for the books, SF and surrounding areas. "
— Sarah, 1/19/2014" Diz's partner, Wes Farrel, is the new DA and smack dab in the middle of a serial murder investigation with massive political overtones. Glitzky's under fire for harassment as he looks for any excuse to put the killer back in jail where he belongs. "
— Ace, 1/14/2014" A good story, well written. Completed reading the book in two days. "
— Dan, 1/9/2014" Hmmmm - not my favorite Lescroart. "
— Janet, 12/25/2013" Lots of funs with twists and turns. Next to impossible to put down. "
— John, 12/17/2013" This is a pretty good read with a lot of dynamics going on. Lawyers and cops and victims families work together to put away a rich serial killer. Everyone knows the perp did it but proving it is difficult. I'm recommending this one for my website too. Yatscoffbooks.com "
— E.R., 12/13/2013" Such a great page turner. Loved every minute of it! Highly reccommend for thrill seekers! Lots of twists and turns that really make for a great ride. "
— Jazzie077, 12/11/2013" I love John Lescroart books. He never fails to entertain. One of my favorite authors of all time. "
— Cathy, 9/19/2012" This was the first book by John Lescroart that I have read. This book was very good, with plenty of suspense. I liked it so much that I plan on reading all of this author's other books. I am currently reading his novel "The Hunter" which is turning out to be just as good! "
— Jessica, 3/16/2012" Love this series; love the recurring characters. Always a good beach read!!! "
— Regina, 1/18/2012" Faster paced than previous Lescroart's books but with familiar protagonist, Hardy, Glitsky,Farrell but they are facing a really nasty villain. Maybe I can't tolerate these horrid human beings anymore? But it is a page turner and Lescroart's holds your attention to the end "
— Stephen, 1/4/2012" I might give him another chance but after a prologue and a few pages I realized he was way below the level of who and what I like. "
— Tim, 9/24/2011" always fun to read a mystery and Lescroart did not disappoint. "
— Drewbaker, 9/8/2011" Enjoyed the story line but was quite surprised near the end! "
— Sue, 8/14/2011" I was quickly caught up in the story and cared for the characters, enough that I was in a panic when killer/rapist shows up at the cop's house and tells the wife "that [the daughter] is a lovely little girl." "
— Linnaea, 7/10/2011" Very fast paced, easy to read and held my attention. I want to read more books by him. "
— Sberkin, 5/20/2011" Lots of funs with twists and turns. Next to impossible to put down. "
— John, 5/18/2011" It was a fast easy read. A good thriller. "
— Shirleen, 5/11/2011" I usually like this author very much. I thought this book was pretty corny at times. "
— Linda, 5/11/2011" Good, serviceable crime fiction, better written than most. This was a little more ambiguous in outlook than others by Lescroart. I do miss the regulars. "
— Andrea, 4/19/2011" enh. i gues it was fast paced, but just didn't really like it. not a whole lot of real sf-ness, and i didn't like the characters (bad guys clearly bad, good guys not that fun, no internal dialogue).

what bothers me is i can't remember what recommended the book to me. "
— James, 4/11/2011" good story. it's easy to dislike the rich in this book. hard to understand the legal shinnanigins that go on. how do these judges sleep? "
— Hrn1947, 4/10/2011" I've read all the Lescroart mysteries, which I usually enjoy, but this was the worst. The plot was implausible and I am tired of brutal, horrific murders. I am also sickened by serial murders, which are not the norm in our society, but I guess sells books. "
— Lori, 4/8/2011" Good read with an exciting ending. "
— Rosemary, 3/28/2011" Love his books - especially liked this one with Abe Glitsky's thoughts. I did find it a little "long on the tooth" to get into the story and the interesting parts. "
— Janice, 3/28/2011" Another good tale by Lescroart. "
