“They called her Water Claire.”
When the young girl washed up on their shore, no one knew she had been a Vessel. That she had carried a Product. That it had been carved from her belly. Stolen.
Claire had had a son. She was supposed to forget him, but that was impossible. When he was taken from their community, she knew she had to follow. And so her journey began.
But here in this wind-battered village Claire is welcomed as one of their own. In the security of her new home, she is free and loved. She grows stronger. As tempted as she is by the warmth of more human kindness than she has ever known, she cannot stay. Her son is out there; a young boy by now. Claire will stop at nothing to find her child . . . even if it means trading her own life.
With Son, the two-time Newbery Medal–winning Lois Lowry has spun another mesmerizing tale in this thrilling and long-awaited conclusion to The Giver.
“Claire’s story stands on its own, but as the final volume in this iconic quartet, it holistically reunites characters, reprises provocative socio-political themes, and offers a transcending message of tolerance and hope.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"I really liked the way that the book, 'Son', the last book of the Giver Quartet, tied in all of the stories from the previous books. I really enjoyed finding out out how the lives of the characters in the previous books turned out. It was interesting to see how different each gift was- Kira's came through her hands while other gifts worked differently. It was sad to see that Matty(from 'Messenger') had died and had not defeated Trademaster. I had to remind myself that he had restored Village and its people. I wonder if after Gabe defeated Trademaster, Lame/Fierce Einar's feet repaired themselves since they were injured by Trademaster himself(or itself since Trademaster was really pure evil)."

“A consummate stylist, Lowry handles it all magnificently: the leaps in time, the shifts in perspective, the moments of extreme emotion—fear, joy, sadness—all conveyed in unadorned prose that seizes the heart. Give this book to your child, your grandmother, your senator, your neighbor: It’s a bipartisan tale for our times.”
— Washington Post“A gripping end to the Giver series.”
— Los Angeles Times“Lowry is one of those rare writers who can craft stories as meaningful as they are enticing.”
— Booklist (starred review)“Written with powerful, moving simplicity, Claire’s story stands on its own, but as the final volume in this iconic quartet, it holistically reunites characters, reprises provocative socio-political themes, and offers a transcending message of tolerance and hope. Bravo!”
— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)" As good as The Giver but not for elementary. May be on the awards list. Middle and high school will enjoy. "
— Carol, 1/22/2014" My first audio-book read. It was nice to be entertained on my work commute and I enjoyed listening to this book. "
— Jenny, 1/10/2014" Writing the culminating book in a series that is wildly popular and destined to be a classic is a daunting task, but one that Lowry handled well. It's been so long since I read the first three that I read this and viewed it as a free-standing story. On that basis I found it to be a solid success. When considered as a means of weaving all the threads of the series together it was equally successful. "
— Sandy, 1/5/2014" This is a compelling ending to the Giver series. All four stories are interwoven to a satisfying conclusion in this futuristic dystopian society. "
— Meg, 12/27/2013" Good continuation of story "
— Susan, 12/24/2013" Really enjoyed this series...highly recommend for a 5th grade student. Adults will enjoy it as well.As I was reading this, the teacher in me was already planning out a novel study unit on these books. "
— Yvonne, 12/5/2013" Son tied up all the loose ends. Nothing matches The Giver, one of the best young adult novels I've ever read, but this is worth the time. "
— Tess, 11/1/2013" I didn't really like this one as much as the rest of the series. It did tie everything together but just seemed to be missing something. "
— Marna, 10/24/2013" Lowry has such a way with words and story telling. It was emotional and interesting at the same time. I love her writing. "
— Genevieve, 10/20/2013" I enjoyed this book, but you should not read it. It completely ruins The Giver. "
— Grace, 9/26/2013" I like this whole series, because I think Lowry is doing some interesting things with the questions of how human society is organized, and also her writing is both vivid and accessible. I really loved the Giver as a kid, so it's been a treat to go back to that world. "
— Cassca55, 9/12/2013" I've read many of Lowry's books and she is an amazing author. This book did not disappoint. "
— Jennie, 8/16/2013" Really good. A really good end to the four books. "
— Joyceliv, 8/5/2013" This was a very thought provoking set of books. I liked the time i spent reading them. "
— Deborah, 8/3/2013" Thank you Lois Lowry for telling Gabe's story. Thank you for concluding this story that began in The Giver. And thank you for Gabe's gift--which if we all had or used could save the world. "
— Jackie, 7/16/2013" I am happy the author continued the Giver saga even though I was fine with the ambiguous ending. It was quite a page turner as I wondered what was going to happen all the way to the end. Just as in the Giver, there is much food for thought. "
— Sylvia, 6/14/2013" The story was wrapped up ver well :D awesome. "
— Jean, 4/1/2013" good closure to the series "
— Suzie, 3/25/2013" A great ending to the series! Now I'd like to go back and read through them all again. "
— Brinda, 3/17/2013" It was sych a good book! Had so much suspense, Lois Lowry has greatly impressed me once again with a breath taking novel! "
— TheJLin17, 12/3/2012" Intersting to see how the series comes together. "
— Lara, 11/12/2012" If you enjoyed The Giver, you'll love this book. It is told (mostly) from the perspective of the woman who is the birth mother of the baby in The Giver. "
