There’s nothing eleven-year-old Marty Preston enjoys more than spending time up in the hills behind his home near Friendly, West Virginia.

But this time is different. This time Marty sees a young beagle on the road past the old Shiloh school-house.

Marty feels sure the dog is being abused by his owner. When the dog runs away to Marty’s house, his parents say he must bring him back. But it hurts Marty to return the runaway dog to his cruel master.

That’s when Marty secretly decides he’ll do anything to save the dog he names Shiloh.

" There are few stories that I truly enjoy reading or listening to. Though this is considered a children's story, I enjoyed it and would prefer it above "adult" stories, as most of them are written to fill a person's mind so full of profanity and/or vulgarity and/or violence, stuff I really don't have a taste for. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 by Emily | 5/20/2011

" This is a heart-wrenching novel that indecribably portrays the special bond between a boy and his dog, and how the sense of right, wrong and overall complicated can affect someone's decisions when blindly following the heart. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 by Kyla | 5/19/2011

" This is a GREAT book! Some paticular parts made me cry, but other than that it isn't that sad of a book. I'm not going to spoil it, so read it for yourself! "
