A long string of tragic loves haunts Viscount Benedick Francis Alistair Rohan. Cool and cynical, he's weary of life's fickle games and wants a prim and proper wife he can ignore while indulging his sensual appetites.

Lady Melisande Carstairs is nothing less than a tornado storming into Benedick's measured life. Possessed of boundless energy and the soul of a reformer, Melisande always conquers, whether it's saving the souls of soiled doves or seducing the man she's inconveniently fallen for. When she informs Benedick that his brother's newly revived Heavenly Host has graduated from simple carnal debauchery to sadistic violence, he's compelled to investigate, undercover. Under those covers, however, is Melisande herself, playing a dangerous game in the name of justice. And the Heavenly Host has just seen her hand, and more.

" As other reviewers have commented, Anne Stuart has a formula for her romances: rakish bad-boy hero who doesn't believe in "love", virginal and/or sexually ignorant, but feisty, heroine, heroine's sexual awakening at the hands etc of the hero, some sort of skulduggery that puts the heroine's life at risk, last-minute rescue of the heroine by the hero because he realizes that he loves her and can't live without her, a cute secondary romance, a good strong dose of wit and humor. But never mind that - formulas are not necessarily a bad thing, and even if you can see where the plot is going from a mile off you'll probably enjoy the journey to get there with Anne Stuart, because her writing is so good. Her formula reminds me of the fact that the great old classical composers (Handel, Haydn, Bach etc) did much the same thing - they had formulas that worked beautifully and that they used repeatedly. And we're still enjoying their music 200-300 years later. "

" OK, this was a pretty great story until the wrap-up, though the hero wasn't as dark and villainous as most of her antiheroes tend to be. The ending wasn't bad, just felt a little hasty. I suspect Stuart is being asked to complete a book every X months by her publisher, which does not necessarily contribute to the quality of the work. But still a great story. "

" Shameless is another great addition to the House of Rohan. This time the focus Benedick Rohan who doesn't seem to be quite as depraved as some of his family yet gets drawn into the world of the Heavenly Host by the unlikely urging of Lady Melisande a do-gooder. It was fun to watch both of them develop in their feelings for each other yet they each try to deny their feelings. This was a very enjoyable book and I hope this isn't the final installment. "
