Publisher Description

Helena is big-sister mouse to three younger siblings, living a snug and well-fed life within the ancient walls of the Cranston family home. When the Cranston humans decide to sail away to England to find a husband for one of their daughters, the Cranston mice stow away in the name of family solidarity.

And so begins the scamper of their lives as Helena, her siblings, and their humans set sail on a life-changing voyage into the great world of titled humans . . . and titled mice, and surprise endings for all. The masterful Richard Peck brings all of his talents to this tale of two branches of an American family, set on the eve of Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. There are plenty of laughs and thrills, and of course there’s a ship’s cat too. Will our Cranston heroes squeak by, or will they go entirely overboard?

"This is not a book my 10-year-old daughter picked up to read on her own when I left it lying around, so we read it aloud. She's now asking about other books by Richard Peck. She especially liked the narrator's voice and the proverbs and cat idioms she uses. It had us both laughing at the upstairs-downstairs, silly class-consciousness of both mice and humans."

" I really enjoyed this one! It was a cute tale, perfect for reading aloud. Loved the humor and characters. It would probably be a better recommendation for girls than boys. "

" Let me start with Samantha enjoyed this book. I was lukewarm for a long while into it. I found it repetative and the protagonist mouse, Helena, a bit whiney. But I gave it a full CD and it got better. While still repetative, Helena really blossoms into a character that you can like and admire. It is a simple story without many twists and turns, but it is straightforward with a sweet ending that left a smile on my face. "
