It is fall. CIA analyst Jack Ryan, historian and former Marine, is vacationing in London with his wife and young daughter. Suddenly, right before his eyes, a terrorist group launches its deadly attack. Instinctively, he dives forward to break it up, and is shot. It is not until he wakes up in the hospital that he learns whose lives he has saved -- the Duke and Duchess of Kent. By his impulsive act, he has gained both the gratitude of a nation and the enmity of its most dangerous men -- men who do not sit on their hate. Patriot Games is a prequel to The Hunt for Red October and has all the excitement and energy of Clancy's famous first book.

"A communist splinter group from the Provisional IRA attempt to kill Jack Ryan and his family in this highly entertaining book. There are only three major actions scenes, but the intervening narrative is well-paced. Occasionally, the repeated descriptions of Ryan and his wife as paragons of professional expertise feel tiresome, but one never sympathises for the heartless terrorists. The predictable final showdown is helpfully adorned by a text-book application of pathetic fallacy, and Ryan's interactions with the Royal Family are amusing."

— Publishers Weekly" Patriot Games, book 2 in the series, is a great and exciting book. Tom Clancy has done it again, making this novel almost where you cannot stop reading until you get to the end of the book in one sitting. I would recommend this book to any Tom Clancy enthusiast as the excitement never stops throughout the book. "
— graymen1, 11/29/2017" I am thoroughly enjoying my first audiobook. The narration is active and character assuming. This is my first audiobook and I must say that 22 hours is a perfect introduction because when I look at other books and I see they're only eight hours in duration I smile and say to myself "that's nothing" lol. I highly suggest this audiobook if you're a Tom Clancy fan. "
— Slow Motion, 5/2/2016" I have read and loved this a few times in the past. After talking about them with someone I decided to give it a try. It was different now. I still liked it, but the different political environment, changes in technology and other things make it seem so out-of-date that it was not as fun. I also had a much harder time with the constant swearing. In the end, I doubt I will ever read it again. "
— Shannon, 2/19/2014" A great suspenseful read, with plenty of character development and drama. The action which begins and ends the book is memorable, but the real story is how Jack Ryan deals with what happens to his family, and his final confrontation with his antagonist. "
