“Nesbø’s storytelling abilities are incomparable. Nemesis is crime novel as art form and great entertainment.” —USA Today
Detective Harry Hole must use his maverick methods once again as he investigates a slew of brutal bank robberies and the suspicious suicide of a female artist in this clever and harrowing installment in the Harry Hole series from the author of The Snowman.
Captured on closed-circuit television: A man walks into an Oslo bank, puts a gun to a cashier's head, and tells her to count to twenty-five. When he doesn't get his money fast enough, he pulls the trigger. The young woman dies—and two million Norwegian kroner disappear without a trace.
After a drunken evening with former girlfriend Anna Bethsen, Police Detective Harry Hole wakes up at home with a headache, no cell phone, and no memory of the past twelve hours. The same day, Anna is found shot dead in her bedroom, making Hole a prime suspect in the investigation led by his hated adversary, Tom Waaler. Meanwhile, the bank robberies continue with unparalleled savagery, sending rogue detective Hole from the streets of Oslo to steaming Brazil in a race to close two cases and clear his name. But Waaler isn't finished with his longtime nemesis quite yet.
The second Harry Hole novel to be released in America—following the critically acclaimed publication of The Redbird—Nemesis is a superb and surprising nail-biter that places Jo Nesbø in the company of Lawrence Block, Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly, and other top masters of crime fiction. Nesbø has already received the Glass Key Award and the Booksellers’ Prize, Norway’s most prestigious literary awards. Nemesis is proof that there are certainly more honors in this extraordinary writer's future.

"What an interesting happenstance to come across this author. Written in the finite and precise style of Stieg Larsson, but without the "wow" factor...or should I say, the "omigod" factor. I found the protagonist, Inspector Harry Hole, to be almost without redeeming qualities, but you can't help liking him and being in his cheering section. This one book had several stories woven within it, and each finally does come to its own conclusion. Might be a bit wordy for many, but intelligently and thoughtfully written. I am going on to another now, The Snowman."

— Booklist (starred review)“The high-intensity action is threaded through a series of Chinese boxes revealing one false solution after another before the brilliantly inventive final twist.”
— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Nesbo offers up another top-notch mystery thriller, thickly layered, perfectly plotted, and briskly paced to keep readers hooked. With ties to events in The Redbreast, this is an excellent sequel…Recommended for all fiction collections and essential for Scandinavian crime lovers.”

— Brenda, 2/1/2014" Absolutely my favorite new writer, Nesbo's character development, plot, the twists and suspense rival Thomas Harris and Larsson. I loved every second of this and The Snowman. "
— Chip, 1/17/2014" Good mystery set in Oslo. Jo Nesbo is one of my favorite crime writers and I hope more of his books are translated soon. The narrator was excellent. This book kept me company over two co plete days of manual labor at our lake house. "
— Pat, 1/8/2014" First time with this author. A very involved plot. Sometimes difficult to remember all the various twists and turns. Some of the difficulty was in the translation assuming the reader understood all places and names. It ends leaving a wonder if characters will show up in another book. "
— Richard, 1/5/2014" Only three stars for this one. Too many storylines for my liking "
— Rachel, 1/5/2014" got to page 333, quit reading, got old, predictable "
— Jerry, 1/2/2014" My personal favorite book from Nesbo. Well constructed and forces readers to just read and read until the last page. "
— Mark, 12/19/2013" Goooood bog. Er fuldt og helt klar til nr. 5 i serien. Fed fed bog. "

— Hana, 9/4/2013" Great if you love those Norwegian Noir crime novels like Steig Larsson writes. "
— Rose, 7/19/2013" Same as Redbreast, the Devil's Star and the Snowman - exciting, clever and edgy, also interesting cultural references. "
— Solar, 4/21/2013" This guy really knows how to craft a storyline. This isn't as good as The Redbreast, but it's still eminently readable. "
— Robert, 3/25/2013" Far-fetched and enjoyable as always "
— Petrus, 11/15/2012" Not as good as The Snowman, but entertaining. "
— Jaclyn, 9/3/2012" Another HarryHole triumph.Preceding the darker Snowman and The Leopard novels, this tale is equallyg ripping but much less gruesome. Nesbo really is a sophisticated thriller writer, who keeps you guessing right to the end--and even thn you can still be unsure about the conclusion. "
— zenbren, 6/28/2012" I found some of the translation to be awkward but otherwise it was enjoyable. I think however if this had been the first Jo Nesbo book I read, I would not be inclined to seek more. "
