Captured on closed-circuit television: A man walks into an Oslo bank, puts a gun to a cashier's head, and tells her to count to 25. When he doesn't get his money fast enough, he pulls the trigger. The young woman dies - and two million Norwegian kroner disappear without a trace.

After a drunken evening with his former girlfriend, Anna Bethsen, Police Detective Harry Hole wakes up at home with a headache, no cell phone, and no memory of the past 12 hours. That same day, Anna is found shot dead in her bedroom, making Hole a prime suspect in an investigation led by his hated adversary, Tom Waaler.

Meanwhile, the bank robberies continue with unparalleled savagery, sending rogue detective Hole from the streets of Oslo to steaming Brazil in a race to close two cases and clear his name. But Waaler isn't finished with his longtime nemesis quite yet.

" What an interesting happenstance to come across this author. Written in the finite and precise style of Stieg Larsson, but without the "wow" factor...or should I say, the "omigod" factor. I found the protagonist, Inspector Harry Hole, to be almost without redeeming qualities, but you can't help liking him and being in his cheering section. This one book had several stories woven within it, and each finally does come to its own conclusion. Might be a bit wordy for many, but intelligently and thoughtfully written. I am going on to another now, The Snowman. "

" Absolutely my favorite new writer, Nesbo's character development, plot, the twists and suspense rival Thomas Harris and Larsson. I loved every second of this and The Snowman. "

" Good mystery set in Oslo. Jo Nesbo is one of my favorite crime writers and I hope more of his books are translated soon. The narrator was excellent. This book kept me company over two co plete days of manual labor at our lake house. "

" First time with this author. A very involved plot. Sometimes difficult to remember all the various twists and turns. Some of the difficulty was in the translation assuming the reader understood all places and names. It ends leaving a wonder if characters will show up in another book. "

" Another HarryHole triumph.Preceding the darker Snowman and The Leopard novels, this tale is equallyg ripping but much less gruesome. Nesbo really is a sophisticated thriller writer, who keeps you guessing right to the end--and even thn you can still be unsure about the conclusion. "
