Publisher Description

"Should appeal to all rugged individualists who dream of escape to the forest."The New York Times Book Review Sam Gribley is terribly unhappy living in New York City with his family, so he runs away to the Catskill Mountains to live in the woods—all by himself. With only a penknife, a ball of cord, forty dollars, and some flint and steel, he intends to survive on his own. Sam learns about courage, danger, and independence during his year in the wilderness, a year that changes his life forever.

"Read this more than 50 years ago. Was interesting to listen to as an adult ... so much has changed since then. Can't imagine a parent today allowing their son to live in the wilderness with no contact whatsoever ... but I could 50 years ago!"

Quotes

  • “How wonderful that this 1959 classic is now an audiobook. Narrator Michael Crouch introduces seventeen-year-old New York City resident Sam Gribley as he relocates to the Catskill Mountains…Crouch deftly embraces the speech patterns and vocabulary of the day and warmly describes the atmospheric setting. Since Sam is usually alone, there’s little dialogue, but his thoughts and endearing conversations with the wildlife he meets sound genuine. Listeners will particularly enjoy sharing time with Frightful, the young peregrine falcon Sam adopts, and trains to retrieve food. It’s inspiring to hear how Sam adapts to nature and uses it to clothe, warm, and feed himself and his menagerie. Vivid descriptions of the seasons, storms, and animals offer a constant ‘you are there’ feel.”

About Jean Craighead George

Jean Craighead George (1919–2012) was born in a family of naturalists. Her father, mother, brothers, aunts, and uncles were students of nature. On weekends they camped in the woods close to their home near Washington, DC, climbed trees to study owls, gathered edible plants, and made fishhooks from twigs. In third grade she began writing—and went on to write over one hundred popular books for young adults and children, including the Newbery Medal–winning Julie of the Wolves and the Newbery Honor book My Side of the Mountain. Most of her books deal with topics related to the environment and the natural world.
