Allison Beckstrom has willingly paid the price of pain to use magic, and has obeyed the rules of the Authority, the clandestine organization that makes—and enforces—all magic policy. But when the Authority's new boss, Bartholomew Wray, refuses to believe that the sudden rash of deaths in Portland might be caused by magic, Allie must choose to follow the Authority's rules, or turn against the very people for whom she's risked her life.
To stop the plague of dark magic spreading through the city, all that she values will be on the line: her magic, her memories, her life. Now, as dead magic users rise to feed upon the innocent and the people closest to her begin to fall, Allie is about to run out of options.

"This book was really 100% action, just whizzed right along and covered only a couple days. You (&Allie) learn a lot more about her dad in this book--including some icky stuff he was doing all along. Pretty sure Shamus has become my favorite character. After Stone of course."

“This chapter in the remarkable series focuses on a magical plague and bureaucracy run amok, both of which threaten all that Allie holds dear. Times and events are getting dark indeed as Monk ratchets up the threat ratio. Excellent as always!”
— RT Book Reviews (4 stars)This dark and delicious novel digs deep into the characters, their relationships, and the mysterious Authority. Allie is one of urban fantasys most entertaining heroines, and her latest adventure will leave [listeners] desperately wanting more.

— Publishers Weekly (starred review)" addictive, i can't seem to put it down. finished it in a day on a half. But i dont know why because the book and characters annoy me most of the time. sure i'll read the next in the series but it's getting repetive, it's very slow going as far as the plot goes (they haven't actually accomplished anything yet, just getting rid of the immediate problems they face until another one comes along), the characters themselves i dont know what to say about it actually they are just annoying and predictable, the book was a little more confusing this time, trying to remember who is possessing who and when is very trying, i don't know how monk keeps it straight. regardless i still like the books. — Jodie, 2/18/2014" Not as good as the others - does wrap some things up. "
— Lori, 2/16/2014" Book 6. See book 1 for a more complete review of the series. As to why the lower rating than the rest of the series? Parts of the long-term story line are getting tedious. Hopefully the next couple of books will resolve some of this. "
— Lisakit, 2/6/2014" Another good installment of the Allie Beckstrom series. Still have not resolved any of the problems in the books, but having a heck of a time trying. lol I don't have any more of the series right now, which may be for the best. I feel like I am a little burnt out on this series at the moment. Maybe we will see some resolution to some of the problems facing Allie and pals in the next book. "
— Wendy, 2/3/2014" went on a reading rampage today and tore through this bad boy in a couple of hours. its a little like an action movie with a great car chase in it. allie throws around some magic and the developing storyline really unfolds with the end sequence. most readers will see the ending to this book coming but it was mildly entertaining. zayvion broke a few rules and shamus made a sacrafice, stone stepup to save the day as usual can that pet rock do nothing wrong or what. three stars "
— Nick, 2/3/2014" This is the sixth book in a series I just finished reading. If I could I would give it 3 1/2 stars. The books are about tough girl and magic user Allie Beckstrom and her fight, along with her boyfriend the ultra cool Zayvion Jones and other secret magic users of Portland, to keep the city safe from various other evil magic users. I love the innovative ideas in the stories, but find the writing is sometimes bogged down and convoluted. I also kept wishing Allie would have developed a little farther in her magic use instead of always being saved by her father, Zayvion on the other members of the Authority. Of course I read all six books in short order and am looking forward to the last two. Can't wait for her mother to finally make an appearance. "
— Jennifer, 1/22/2014" My favourite of the series so far. No doubt. Seriously fantastic! I'm just annoyed now I'll have to wait a whole week before the next book arrives in the post ;) "
— Claire, 1/20/2014" Book six in the Adventures of Allie Beckstrom, her hounds and her "friends" in the Authority. Lot's of suspense, drama, magical fights, and an ending that leaves me a bit pensive about the next book. You'll just have to read it and find out for yourselves. "
— Nora-adrienne, 1/7/2014" Love the Allie Beckstrom books! "
— Jean, 12/24/2013" This book is fantastic. It never stopped moving, even when the stopped to catch their breath. I can't wait for book 7. "
— Jenna, 12/18/2013" Another awesome book in the Allie Beckstrom series. This may be my favorite so far, loved it! "
— Poppy, 12/12/2013" Really good, this series just gets better. "
— Mark, 11/9/2013" Love this author. Great beginning. Always tons of action. If you ever thought you had a terrible father, well take a gander at this one. "
— Heather, 5/8/2013" Can't wait fir the next one...I want the happy ending too! "
— Carmen, 1/12/2013" This series is really staying strong! "
— Lori, 11/5/2012" Nice but not great. 6th book in a series that I've mostly read for the Endeavour Award - the 3rd book unfortunately was the peak - this book feels a bit tired but not bad. 3.5 of 5. "
— Mitchell, 5/24/2012" Really enjoyed the book. I think it may be my favorite of the series. If you've read any of the other books, pick this one up. If you haven't, but might enjoy a supernatural series, try this series out. "
