The bestselling author of Where the Heart Is returns with a heartrending tale of two children in search of a place to call home.
Lutie McFee's history has taught her to avoid attachments...to people, to places, and to almost everything. With her mother long dead and her father long gone to find his fortune in Las Vegas, 15-year-old Lutie lives in the god-forsaken town of Spearfish, South Dakota with her twelve-year-old brother, Fate, and Floy Satterfield, the 300-pound ex-girlfriend of her father. While Lutie shoplifts for kicks, Fate spends most of his time reading, watching weird TV shows and worrying about global warming and the endangerment of pandas. As if their life is not dismal enough, one day, while shopping in their local Wal-Mart, Floy keels over and the two motherless kids are suddenly faced with the choice of becoming wards of the state or hightailing it out of town in Floy's old Pontiac. Choosing the latter, they head off to Las Vegas in search of a father who has no known address, no phone number and, clearly, no interest in the kids he left behind.
Made in the U.S.A. is the alternately heartbreaking and life-affirming story of two gutsy children who must discover how cruel, unfair and frightening the world is before they come to a place they can finally call home.

"I liked this book more than any of her others. Of course there are the requisite Walmart scenes showing up on the first pages but well, this the US and that store is a huge presence in many peoples's lives. I just had to keep reading to see how things turned out for these two kids with no safety net so I read it in a 24 hour period. I loved all the circus scenes and portrayal of the circus family as caring for their animals. A great read!"

“A moving coming-of-age tale.”
— Publishers Weekly“Cassandra Morris is amazingly strong in her delivery, giving a tremendous performance in which her fresh voice is perfectly suited for 15-year old Lutie.”
— Publishers Weekly (audio review)“An uplifting tearjerker.”
— Kirkus Reviews" Some parts of this book very very emotional and hard to get through, but overall it's a good book. "
— Nikki, 2/20/2014" This was hard to read. There is some drug life stuff that is hard to cope with, and it seems like it's kind of unrealistic for two children to live like this. It was written well, and it ended well. "
— Vicky, 2/12/2014" Too bad the ending isn't as good as the rest of the book. "
— Ellen, 2/9/2014" Billie Letts is one of those Authors I keep going back to. I love her characters. This one is good not great. "
— Dayna, 2/9/2014" Not her usual work. I know her husband was dying while she was writing this, and it shows. Although the story is sound, her prose and storytelling is sub-par. The two children are likable enough, but Lutie's secret is kinda . . . a letdown. There were so many other places Letts could have taken this, but it was predictable and not necessarily in a good way. Stick to The Honk and Holler Opening Soon - better characters, better story, better writing. "
— Jenn, 2/8/2014" I loved this book. Billie Letts always creates such heartbreaking characters and gives them a beautiful journey. Totally recommend! "
— Laura, 1/19/2014" I am 3/4 through this book and love it. Everything Billie Letts writes is wonderfully written. You get to know the characters so well and never know exactly where the story is going until it gets there. "
— Joan, 1/18/2014" This was her 4th book and it was so good. I just love her stories. They are so original and the charaters are so quirky. you really felt bad for Lutie and Fate and what happened to them. I also love her stories because you can never tell what is going to happen. "
— Brandy, 12/13/2013" It was a very good book and it was also sad too knowing what Fate and Lutie had to go through to survive. I could not put this book down. "
— Carina, 11/30/2013" Started strong, got a bit predictable. Billie Letts has written some great books so wanted to give this one a try. "
— Janice, 11/29/2013" A few passages during their time in Las Vegas are sexually explicit, sad, and may not appeal to some readers. Overall the book like Letts' others is very good. "
— Sharon, 11/25/2013" I liked this book. It definitely had elements in it that some people may not like. It deals with some very tough subjects. But overall, i really liked the characters. I like the way she writes. "
— Jane, 10/31/2013" As a parent, this was a difficult book to read. "
— Judy, 10/17/2013" It was a good book, but I felt there were some "unrealities" in it--things that made the story questionable. "
— Bethanne, 9/14/2013" I love everything by Billie Letts, but this is my favorite of her books. Riveting from very beginning to end. I cried @ the end, but not due to sadness. Can't explain why but you'll know when you read it. "
— Tara, 1/26/2013" I devour Billie's books as fast as she puts them out. Her writing is simple and honest. "
— Stephanie, 1/4/2013" An easy read and not quite as good as previous books by Lett's. But still interesting. "
— Cschlarbaum, 11/30/2012" This was such a wonderful book! Great story line, and an absolute page turner! "
— Hannah, 5/29/2012" Loved this one. One of my favorites. Characterization was wonderful and the plot was excellent. "
— Patti, 7/25/2011" Good book. Liked the characters and interesting/sad story. It reminded me a lot of her other book (Where the Heart Is.) "
— Thebestdogmom, 3/13/2011" I like everything that Billie Letts has written. It is so nice to read a story about the goodness of people, but without it being super hoakey. This is a great feel good book, just like the rest of her stories. "
— Rusane, 5/14/2010" Not the best book by Billie Letts, but a good book. It was her typical, pull at the heart strings story. I much prefer Where The Heart Is, but that's just me. If you like Letts' writing, then you'll probably enjoy this book. "
— Victoria, 4/7/2010" Billie Letts is a very good writer; I did not like this book as much as I liked her other fiction but it is a page turner and she has created wonderful characters and there are important life lessons in the book but the book is not preachy. "
— Jan, 2/20/2009" This was unexpected and really, really good! "
— Jamie, 2/13/2009" I really really enjoyed the first half, but the second half was predictable and slow. "
