Peyton Shields had always wanted to be a doctor, and now, thanks to her relentless drive, stellar academic credentials, and a mountain of debt to Harvard Medical School, she’s a first-year resident at a major children’s hospital in Boston. The hours are impossibly long, but it’s the life she wants—complete with a husband who’s an up-and-coming young lawyer.

But a late-night drive home in a heavy snowstorm changes everything. A car coming straight at her drives her off the road and into a frozen pond. Peyton knows she’d be dead if a stranger hadn’t pulled her from the wreckage before vanishing into the darkness.

In an instant her wonderful life has turned dark. No one believes her claims that the “accident” was deliberate—not even her husband. Without explanation, he has become distant and bitter, calling her paranoid and accusing her of having an affair with a former lover.

But the terror has only begun, for a series of strange, increasingly dangerous events begin to plague Peyton, moving her closer to a faceless and very deadly enemy—who seems to know her every move.

" First time reader. A beautiful, educated couple with a healthy dose of distrust of each other, along with a homicidal maniac. All the makings of a good short story. Too bad it was so long. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Samantha | 2/3/2014

" This book was really interesting for me. It's a very quick and exciting thriller. The characters are contructed in a way that makes you bond easily to them. You cared about what's going to happen next. But I will say that the twists in the book keep you going and going. I thought I knew who was behind it but then it turned in a completely different direction. I enjoyed the interplay between all the couples: Peyton and her husband, her parents and the lawyers that represent them. I found the ending to be different and fascinating although I wish it wouldn't have wrapped up quite so quickly and neatly. I wanted to explore it a little further. I highly recommend this book. I got it from Zooba for $9.95 with no shipping for the hardback. I recommend anything from Grippando. "

" Peyton Shields, a doctor in residency at Boston's Children Hospital, has great career she love, a husband she loves and on negative side someone stalking her. Things start taking a turn for the worse when she's forced off the road and almost dies but is "saved" at the last minute by a mysterious stranger who vanishes. Then a friend whose is her former teeanage boyfriend is found dead and she and her husband are put on trial for his murder. Who's making all this happen. No spoiler alert but I figured it out about just before the end which is an amazing feat for me. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Glenn | 1/16/2014

" Interesting twists and turns, however, the murderer comes out of the blue, due to minimal references, so you can't really consider him/her until the very end. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lou | 1/13/2014

" Fast paced, although until the murder trial begins, it reads more like a "subway trash" novel than a well written thriller. "

I didn't care for this book too much. I don't particularly like books where the villain is
known from the beginning. There just wasn't much suspense intrigue. Some of the trial scenes
were interesting, but in the most part the story didn't engage me. "
