A kid from Miami's meanest streets, Theo Knight lost his mother to a violent crime. He was on Death Row for a murder he didn't commit when lawyer Jack Swyteck proved him innocent. Now they are best friends. Theo is a semi-respectable and successful bar owner, but the past, with its risks and its terrors, has come knocking on his back door. An escaped convict from the old neighborhood wants sanctuary, and in return he is offering information: the identity of the killer who left Theo's mom lying dead in the street on a hot South Florida evening.
Theo wants justice, but the answers are not simple. He and Jack must now piece together a twenty-year-old conspiracy of greed and corruption that's pointing toward the city's most elite and powerful. And digging through a history that Theo has struggled his whole life to forget could awaken some very desperate, very deadly sleeping dogs.

"Although this is not generally my genre of books, Mr. Grippando, kept my interest with the fast paced story. The references to Miami places was delightful and so much more meaningful than had references to a strange place. I listened to it and have to say that the actor reading the book was very good also. I fell in love with the whole Jack Swyteck crew and probably will read more in the future. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Grippando as he did an author talk and all the other listeners agreed that he was wonderful. Great presentation and a really nice guy!"

“There’s plenty of shoot-’em-up action,…but Grippando goes beyond the formula. Touches of humor…and a feeling for the history of the city propel this thriller beyond the ordinary. In addition to action, the author gives us people we can root for, both on the street and in their private lives.”
— Kirkus Reviews" Very good, as usual this author turns out can't put down books, recommend highly! "
— Teri, 2/16/2014" This was good. It's a legal type suspense, sort of along the lines of John Grisham. "
— Mary, 2/15/2014" My first book by this author and I am definitely coming back, there seems to be a book before this one, because at least 3 of the characters seem to have a back story. There was some violence that was over the top for me, so no 5 stars, but given the setting (street gangs) that I have no knowledge of, maybe the violence is accurate, hopefully not. I like the relationships between Jack the white lawyer, Theo, a black child of the ghetto and former death row inmate, Andie the FBI agent and Cy, Theo's uncle. They are all complex and real emotions. "
— Ginny, 2/3/2014" I like the characters, but the plot was only so-so. "
— Andrea, 1/22/2014" I am never disappointed with a James Grippando book! Love the Jack Series! "
— Melonie, 1/18/2014" Graphic, but good novel. 7 of 10 stars. "
— Tim, 1/16/2014" Maybe more like 2.5 stars. The reason I like the mystery/thriller genre is that I'm a sucker for the "Whoa, I didn't see that coming" moment. Almost always I don't see it coming, but in this one, I did. It was pretty clear to me, too. Not Grippando's best effort. "
— Scott, 1/15/2014" very good book. You feel like you know these people. Hard to put down. "

— Jean, 10/2/2012" I just could not like this mystery. I didn't care what happened to either the good guys or the bad guys because the characters weren't fleshed out very well. I noticed that overall the book got a much higher rating than I gave it, but still I can't recommend it unless you are stuck on an island! "
— Su, 10/22/2011" Twisted and a bit stretched plot lines, involving Theo Knight and his family. Suspenseful nonetheless. "
— Skip, 10/13/2011" Change...it can happen but it's hard and we still find ourselves falling back on those tendencies. Staying strong and doing the right thing is the key. Interesting read but not one of my favorites. "
— M, 6/18/2011" Een wat minder goed verhaal uit de reeks, maar op zich geen slecht boek. "

— Skip, 1/14/2009" This is a great continuation of the Jack Swyteck series. Grippando's chapters are concise and loaded with suspense without all the pointless filler. This is a good read for any who-done-it fan and is presented in an effortless way-kind of like the Hardy Boys only cooler!! "
— Jason, 6/30/2008" I just could not like this mystery. I didn't care what happened to either the good guys or the bad guys because the characters weren't fleshed out very well.
