Las reflexiones sobre las cualidades que debe tener un buen capitán (o cualquier persona que quiera ejercer una autoridad de forma efectiva y eficaz, y al mismo tiempo ser respetado por los subordinados), las observaciones sobre temas tan variados como el dinero, el sexo o el amor y la profundización en los aspectos más humanos de los personajes son algunos de los puntos fuertes de esta novela. Sin embargo, como no podía ser de otra manera, no carece de acción, sino más bien al contario: Durante un viaje a las Indias Orientales, Aubrey deberá enfrentarse a los navíos enviados por Napoleón para aniquilar la flota inglesa que opera en Francia.
