Reminiscent of Ruth Rendell, multiple award-winning author Deborah Crombie creates graceful mysteries, resonating with lyrical prose, elegant suspense, and finely-drawn characters. This is her darkly irresistible tale of friendship shattered by shocking betrayal, and repercussions that echo down through the years. A stunningly beautiful young woman is found strangled in London's Mudchute Park, her clothing carefully arranged to preserve her modesty. With that unusual detail in mind, Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his partner Sergeant Gemma James suspect the crime was more than a simple assault gone awry. As they collect the strange facts surrounding her death, they discover the victim's life was a mystery even to those who knew her best. Internationally-acclaimed author Deborah Crombie brilliantly weaves together events of World War II England with complex problems of present-day London. As British actor Jenny Sterlin's superb dramatization unfolds, you'll understand why this crime novel is as at home on the bookshelf with literary novels as it is with the most baffling whodunit.

"This is the best in this series that I have read so far. The inclusion of the story from the time of the children during their evacuation to the country during WWII was excellent. I had always thought the kids who went to the country were sent by their parents to live out the war with relatives. I didn't realize there was a mandatory evacuation of children under a certain age and they were sent into the homes of strangers for what turned out to be several years of their lives. The fear of being with strangers and not knowing if their parents were safe as the bombings continued in the cities would have been terrifying. As this book brings out, the change in their lives from that experience had consequences 50 years after the war."

" This is the 6th in the Duncan Kincaid/ Gemma James series. Excellent...Deborah is now on her 13th. Question to self, "do I need to slow down???". Another question, "can I???". "
— Ann, 2/20/2014" Gemma and Kincaid are called in to investigate the death of the director and part owner of a family firm of tea merchants. As always there are many suspects and many layers to the mystery. Meanwhile, Gemma feels a personal connection to one of the victim's associates. An interesting parallel story from 50 years prior dovetails nicely with current events at the end. One of the better in the series so far. "
— Carol/Bonadie, 2/6/2014" This is another good one.I especially liked the tie in with WWII. I need to start this series from the beginning, but I'm enjoying them anyway I read them. "
— Betty, 1/31/2014" Not my favorite in this series but it filled in some blanks in the Gemma and Duncan story "
— Cindy, 1/30/2014" Another Gemma and Duncan mystery...Great build-up of the plot... "
— Suzanne, 1/19/2014" I listened to this. The narrator is excellent! I am really enjoying this series of mysteries. Crombie combines some British History with current day for an interesting mix. There's lots of nuance to her characters, like P.D. James or Ruth Rendell. And I did figure out the murderer early on. "
— Joanne, 1/8/2014" I'm a total sucker for mysteries where a past event informs a current crime, and this one's a fine example. The ongoing plotlines and eminent plausibility of the action keeps the series lively. And I totally wish Hazel was my neighbor. "
— Jessica, 12/28/2013" Didn't agree with several points..still held my interest, I was shocked and disappointed in one incident uncovered near the end. She's still a fabulous writer. "
— Elizabeth, 12/23/2013" One of my favorite kinds of mysteries is the type where a crime with roots in the past must be solved. In this one, Kincaid and James investigate a murder with roots in World War II. "
— Nikki, 12/8/2013" The mystery behind this reaches back to WWII. I love the British history and geography that flavors Crombie's books. The thread that holds them all together is the oh-so-real, and therefore complicated relationship between Duncan and Gemma. Another good one! "
— Jan, 4/27/2013" This series just keeps getting better and better. I stayed up late to finish this one - I just couldn't put it down. Thanks to my sister-in-law who introduced me to this series. "
— Shari, 1/24/2013" Set on the Isle of Dogs, London. "
— Judi, 1/19/2013" Am new to Deborah Crombie. Really like Kincaid and James and will definitely be reading more. "
— Wendy, 11/1/2012" It was OK, don't care for the narrator. "
— Susan, 7/1/2012" Mystery goes back to the war years with children in London being sent out to the country. Author weaves a present day murder and the past of all the people being investigated in a very clever way. "
— Deb, 2/28/2012" Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James #6 find on audio format. "
— Rochelle, 7/28/2011" I do enjoy this series. I love how Crombie goes to the effort to add detail to minor characters. Other mystery writers often create plug-in cut outs for anyone who is not the detective, the victim or a suspect. In this mystery local detective Janice Coppin has a real life and a back story. "
— Nancy, 7/14/2011" One of the best things about this detective series are the great titles. "
— Sandra, 6/18/2011" Great character development in this British crime mystery featuring partners Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James.
Excellent read! "
— Kathleen, 4/23/2011" I liked this very much. Written by an American author but is set in Britain and the crime is
solved by the British police. Good plot, interesting characters. "
— Jetreno, 1/27/2011" This is another good one.I especially liked the tie in with WWII. I need to start this series from the beginning, but I'm enjoying them anyway I read them. "
— Betty, 7/29/2010" Am new to Deborah Crombie. Really like Kincaid and James and will definitely be reading more. "
— Wendy, 2/19/2010" Does not disappoint. I love this author. As I said before, she gives me
a textured and satisfying feast "
— Linda, 2/2/2010" This series just keeps getting better and better. I stayed up late to finish this one - I just couldn't put it down. Thanks to my sister-in-law who introduced me to this series. "
— Shari, 12/2/2009" OK. Not my favorite in the series but still good. "
— Kandice, 10/24/2009" Be sure to read this series in order because, although each novel is a well plotted mystery, the main charm comes in the protagonists: the British detective and his assistants and their engaging stories and development. The morals, however, of the detectives are "modern,"so be warned. "
— Sandra, 7/4/2009" This is the 6th in the Duncan Kincaid/ Gemma James series. Excellent...Deborah is now on her 13th. Question to self, "do I need to slow down???". Another question, "can I???". "
— Ann, 3/19/2009" One of my favorite kinds of mysteries is the type where a crime with roots in the past must be solved. In this one, Kincaid and James investigate a murder with roots in World War II. "
— Nikki, 2/12/2009" Another Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James mystery. This title got a lower rating than Dreaming of the Bones since it was sooo complicated, I had trouble following the story - kind of needed a list of all characters and who/what they are and did. Still, I enjoyed the book. "
