About various authors

Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker and a washerwoman. As a young teenager, he became quite well known in Odense as a reciter of drama and as a singer. When he was fourteen, he set off for the capital, Copenhagen, determined to become a national success on the stage. He failed miserably, but made some influential friends in the capital who got him into school to remedy his lack of proper education. In 1829 his first book was published. After that, books came out at regular intervals. His stories began to be translated into English as early as 1846. Since then, numerous editions, and more recently Hollywood songs and Disney cartoons, have helped to ensure the continuing popularity of the stories in the English-speaking world.

Betty White (1922—2021) was an American actress, comedian, television host, and TV legend whose career spanned over seventy years. She received six Emmy awards and eighteen Emmy nominations. She was presented with the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, two Viewers for Quality Television Awards, and three American Comedy Awards, including for Lifetime Achievement. She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her best-known television roles include Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls. In January 2010, she appeared in an advertisement during the 2010 Super Bowl that won the top spot on the USA Today Super Bowl Ad Meter. Due to a grassroots campaign on Facebook, she hosted Saturday Night Live in May 2010, making her at age eighty-eight the oldest person to host the show. She was also recognized for her affiliation with animal charities such as “Actors and Others for Animals” and the Morris Animal Foundation.

Robby Benson, three-time Golden Globe nominee, is an American film and television actor, voice artist, television director, and educator.
