Estrella deMadrigal thought she knew herself: daughter, granddaughter, sister, dearest friend, beloved. She is Star in the Night Sky, Truth in the Darkness. But truth is rare and precious in this cruel and unforgiving century in Spain, when Jews who refused conversion to Christianity risked everything - love, life, family, faith. Then: A startling discovery shakes Estrella’s world to the core. And yet, it is something small and sweet that sets it aflame. A kiss. A kiss from someone she is forbidden to love. As a new girl emerges from the cocoon of secrets in which she has been shrouded, passion burns and friendship crumbles - and betrayal unleashes a monstrous evil from the very deepest part of the earth. Estrella crosses over to a place she never thought she could be; she is someone she never could have imagined. Remember the story she is about to tell you. Download and start listening now!

" So far, I like this book. It shows the story from the view of a secret Jew. I have a few problems with this book. First off, even though I know it's a young adult's book, it seems to be for youngER adults. The book isn't grown up enough for the topic it covers, and it's clear to me while I read the book. Second, the lack of quotation marks and the use of italics instead is annoying, and I don't know why the Hoffman decided to write it like that, it's different, but definately unnecessary. And third, the book is taking a weird pace. I think this kind of book deserves either a very slow, or very fast pace, due to the topic. It should either take a long, dragged out beginning before revealing the problem, or have a short, quick beginning, for the purposes of explination only. Other than those things, I like the book. I enjoy reading it, and I can't wait to find out what happens next. I like how Hoffman puts small climaxes everywhere throughout the story, and I really want to read the big one. Good so far. "

" I enjoyed this book but wish the story would have gone on much longer. I really wanted the story to continue through Estrella's adulthood. "

" While depicting the true horror and evilness of the Spanish Inquisition, it was not the most compelling of Hoffman's novels. "

" It was difficult for me to read the details of how the Jewish people were mistreated during the Spanish Inquisition. Powerful and important. "

" I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I was sooooo into this book because the main plot was connected to the times when Jews weren't treated equal. The twist of suspense and the horror just made it WAYYYY better!! A Must Read book! You will really like it if you're into the Holocaust. "

" I have only read the first chapter of this book and it is already fasicinating. I am excited to figure out the meaning of this book, and learn more about the characters. I hope they overcome there situations or the problems that they will probably face in thhis book. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 'Chele | 6/9/2012

" Great book about choices people have to make about their lives and religion. Set in 1500, Spain, teenagers are faced with hatred and lies "to protect them". "

" I read this in one night, which is unusual for me, so it must have been pretty good! It was much more poetic/mysterious than most juvenile historical fiction I've read, but by the end I still learned about a period of history I hadn't studied before. "

" I actually listened to this book on my ipod. The narrator was great, and the writing and imagery was lovely. A little more of a serious read, but very enjoyable. It should really be rated 3.5 stars. "

" I learned more about the Spanish Inquisition and about the situation of the Jews. Many Jews had converted to Christianity to avoid persecution even before the Inquisition began, which Estella's family had done. This is a painful book, written in beautiful prose. "
