"This is the first Nevada Barr book I've read and I was bowled over with her excellent characterization details and story line! I listened to it on CD, loved the narration by Barbara Rosenblat--I doubt I could or would listen to another Nevada Barr book without her. Sometimes the characters--both hero and villian-- are a little over-the-top and unbelievably strong or evil, but for a mystery to listen to while driving, it's great. I also enjoy the national park service settings."

Opening a Nevada Barr mystery is like stepping into a literary wonderland.
— --The Denver Post" 3.5 This probably fits in pretty well with our recent Norwegian and Swedish mystery reading since it is equally dark. A serial killer poses as a park ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park and kidnaps three girls from a polygamist commune. The warped killer violence is definitely Scandinavian in tone and is atypical for Nevada Barr. This one is a good fit to Rocky Mountain National Park. The excellent descriptions of backwoods beauty make you want to go there (after they have locked up all of the serial killer park rangers). "
— Dick, 2/16/2014" Brutal, nasty and/but she does tell a good mystery with the Rockies nat'l park as the setting. "
— Meg, 2/12/2014" The book was alright right - however the story line could of been better. It was a little dell in the beginning. other than that it was a good read. "
— Darlene, 2/3/2014" There seems to be two groups of readers of the Anna Pigeon mysteries. I belong in the group that enjoys the settings and histories of the National Parks with a mystery. I'm not in the group which likes the darkness of "true crime" genre. I would put this one in the dark variety, and I don't recommend it to my friends who prefer the earlier books. "
— Hikerdee, 2/3/2014" This is one of the best - and most disturbing books I ever read! Beautifully written, as always, this book explores an incarnation of tue evil and what people will do to survive. "
— Aldebaran, 1/27/2014" Forest Ranger, Anna Pigeon has just married sheriff Paul Davidson when her new orders send her off to Rocky Mountain National Park. Three girls have gone missing and two turn up with amnesia. anna must solve the mystery. "
— Marie, 1/26/2014" Another entertaining story about Anna Pigeon, this on in RMNP. "
— Lynn, 1/26/2014" I normally like Anna Pigeon books, but I don't like reading about violence against women and children. while i did lke some of the book, it was far more violent than many of the barr books "
— Judy, 1/25/2014" The hardest-edged and (possibly) the best of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series. "
— Craig, 1/19/2014" The first chapter is a real nail biter. The remainder of the book had me guessing, often wrong what was happening. I enjoyed the twist of having a polygamist religious fanatic in the mix with a bunch of underpaid law enforcement and a psycho killer. "
— Denise, 1/18/2014" a plot line taken right out of today's headlines...kind of scary, that. "
— Christa, 1/7/2014" A pretty mindless mystery that takes place in Rocky Mtn. National Park, but I needed something mindless... "
— Carol, 1/3/2014" Rocky Mtn NP. Typical Nevada Barr but I love Anna Pigeon - she is my hero. "
— Candy, 11/19/2013" A little faster paced for a Anna Pigeon novel. Heath's storyline kept the story moving. We weren't in Anna's head as much as previous books, which I found welcoming. "
— Sara, 11/14/2013" Another superwoman escape and implausible story. Time to switch to another author. "
— Lwalling, 10/17/2013" Rocky Mt. Natl Park. A psychopath that abuses girls. Barr seems to be telling about harder and harder villians. They are getting harder to read. "
— Leonard, 6/4/2013" I found this Anna Pigeon novel very enjoyable. "
— Jill, 3/12/2013" Got it, but did not read it because it dealt with violence to children. I'll read the newspaper if I want to read about that kinda crap. Lapse in judgement on Nevada Barr's part....... "
— Louann, 11/20/2012" I usually enjoy Anna Pigeon's adventures in the National parks, but I found this one to be too violent and the bad guy very unbelievable. "
— Gail, 6/16/2012" Woah. I love the Anna Pigeon series, but this is probably one of the darkest, most twisted story lines. "
— Aunt, 5/7/2012" This books are alwasy spine tingling for me at at the edge of what I can tolerate violence-wise. But I keep reading them. This one is set in Rocky Mt National park and involves a polygamous sect. "
— Joyce, 4/22/2012" At first, the book pulls you in and you think it is going to be a really good mystery. It does not take long before the book becomes dark, too dark. Unlike Barr's other books, this one was difficult to finish. I can only hope her newest book is better. "
— Julia, 4/13/2012" As a whole I simply love all of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon books. This one was WAY too dark and sinister for my tastes. Truly Evil. "
— Wendy, 3/1/2012" Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series is always entertaining and the characters (especially Anna) are well developed. A page turner. "
— Cindi, 1/2/2012" one of the nicest things about having a librarian as your friend is that she introduces you to new authors! this one is a dandy, can't wait to read more. "
— Tsudy697, 12/30/2011" I liked the character of Anna Pigeon. This was a really fast, and exciting read. "
— Sara, 10/16/2011" This was not my favorite Anna Pigeon story. It was pretty awful as a matter of fact. Nevada Barr is a great writer but the story was very sad. "
— Perlinda, 5/10/2011" Rocky Mtn NP. Typical Nevada Barr but I love Anna Pigeon - she is my hero. "
— Candy, 4/6/2011" Audiobook -
Not bad , but a little heavy on the violence . "
— Angie, 3/18/2011" Read by Barbara Rosenblatt. Nevada Barr's writing style is becoming more evil. I'm not sure I like it. "
— Pithee, 2/26/2011" Excellent Nevada Barr book. Had to get the rest of her books that I haven't read yet on tape so I could listen to them all. "
— Merceda, 11/8/2010" I liked the character of Anna Pigeon. This was a really fast, and exciting read. "
— Sara, 10/23/2010" I finished this, and I will go pick up the newest Anna Pigeon book which is on hold for me at the library, but I don't know if I will read any more of Nevada Barr's books. If I wanted to watch a super gruesome episode of NCIS, I would watch a super gruesome episode of NCIS. "
— Rebekah, 9/7/2010" I always like Nevada Barr, though this one took some time to get into it.
"
— Charles, 8/22/2010" Bit gross, quite frankly. I needed a mass market paperback for the bus and to fit in my teeny bag for a weekend trip and this fit the bill. I like the idea of an NPS ranger heroine but the plot was pretty disgusting. "
— Anna, 7/19/2010" One of her most disturbing and least predictable yet, I think. Hard to put down, especially at night. "
— Abigail, 7/5/2010" I've liked all the Anna Pigeon books I've read "
— Anna, 6/21/2010Nevada Barr was born in the
small western town of Yerington, Nevada, and raised on a mountain airport in
the Sierras. Pushed out of the nest, she fell into theatre, receiving her BA in
speech and drama and her MFA in acting before making the pilgrimage to New York
City, then Minneapolis. For eighteen years she worked on stage, in commercials
and industrial training films, and doing voiceovers for radio. During this time
she became interested in the environmental movement and began working in
National Parks across the country during the summers. Woven throughout these
seemingly disparate careers was the written word. Nevada wrote and presented
campfire stories, taught storytelling, and was a travel writer and restaurant
critic. She has won both the Agatha and Anthony awards for best first mystery.
Barbara Rosenblat, one of the most awarded narrators in the business, was selected by AudioFile magazine as one of the Golden Voices of the Twentieth Century. She has received the prestigious Audie Award multiple times and has earned more than fifty AudioFile Earphones Awards. She has also appeared in film, television, and theater, both in London’s West End and on Broadway.
