"This was given to me as a gift. Perhaps a run-of-the-mill title, but not a genre I read a lot. I thoroughly enjoyed this crime/drama/whodunnit. Two protoganists, one a female park ranger I understand is the repeat star of a series of titles by this author featuring crimes in National Parks, the other a paraplegic woman, former climber, just adjusting to her new wheelchair bound life. Both were believable to me and likable. Although plot driven of course, there was enough characterization that the MAIN characters were not wooden or TOO flat. A little disturbing at the end when you finally get to the facts of the actual crime. I would be interested in checking out more of the titles in this series. This one takes place in Rocky Mountain National Park, and I have been there, so my experience with the park was a bonus to me in reading this. I will say though that if ALL the crimes turned out to be this disturbing (this one features a definite psychopath/sociopath criminal) I might become disenchanted."

" The premise of this AP mystery was a recent move to Rocky Mountain to take a district ranger job. When she arrives, she finds that 3 children have been long missing in ROMO's moutainous terrain, and their LDS-like parents aren't even actively looking for them. Main characters included a recently paralyzed rock climber and her Dr./aunt, and a young male youth group leader. I have to say I was disapppointed in this one. It seems that the author Barr has truly mastered the building-up-suspense and plot-developing aspects of her mystery novels, but in the last couple books I wasn't entirely thrilled with how she sealed the deal. Frankly, I found this ending truly unenjoyable and less than climactic. Once I realized what was happening, I just wanted to get it over with. I think I am going to take a hiatus from reading AP mysteries. "

" I can't believe I couldn't remember reading this book when I was adding the Barr's to my "read" list. I did though, and wow did it come rushing back while leafing through it at trusty B and N. Excellent tension, good read. I really enjoy this series. This one got a little rough for me with the victims but it really was a good addition to the series. Now I can start Winter Study! "

" 3.5 This probably fits in pretty well with our recent Norwegian and Swedish mystery reading since it is equally dark. A serial killer poses as a park ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park and kidnaps three girls from a polygamist commune. The warped killer violence is definitely Scandinavian in tone and is atypical for Nevada Barr. This one is a good fit to Rocky Mountain National Park. The excellent descriptions of backwoods beauty make you want to go there (after they have locked up all of the serial killer park rangers). "

About Nevada Barr

Nevada Barr was born in the small western town of Yerington, Nevada, and raised on a mountain airport in the Sierras. Pushed out of the nest, she fell into theatre, receiving her BA in speech and drama and her MFA in acting before making the pilgrimage to New York City, then Minneapolis. For eighteen years she worked on stage, in commercials and industrial training films, and doing voiceovers for radio. During this time she became interested in the environmental movement and began working in National Parks across the country during the summers. Woven throughout these seemingly disparate careers was the written word. Nevada wrote and presented campfire stories, taught storytelling, and was a travel writer and restaurant critic. She has won both the Agatha and Anthony awards for best first mystery.
