The "richly detailed, almost indecently thrilling" (New York Times) follow up to The Serpent's Tale When a fire at Glastonbury Abbey reveals two skeletons, rumor has it they may belong to King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. King Henry II hopes so, for it would help him put down a rebellion in Wales, where the legend of Celtic savior Arthur is strong. To make certain, he sends Adelia Aguilar, his Mistress of the Art of Death, to Glastonbury to examine the skeletons. At the same time, the investigation into the abbey fire will be overseen by the Bishop of St. Albans, father of Adelia's daughter. Trouble is, someone at Glastonbury doesn't want either mystery solved, and is prepared to kill to prevent it...

"Much praised series, I was kind of Meh about the first so didn't read second, whose reported storyline didn't snare me. This one sounded more interesting and was indeed, very good, better than the first and compulsively readable."

" Third in the "Mistress" series, and unfortunately, it's been a while since I read book 1 and I've somehow skipped book 2 [return][return]My discomfort at the modern terminology has been lessened from Book 1, primarly because she does little around dead bodies in this book - most of the story revolves around her investigations over 2 bodies discovered after Glastonbury burns down. King Henry II wishes these can be claimed to be King Arthur and Guinevere, to help put down the rebellious Welsh. "
— Sorcha, 2/4/2014" Woman "doctor"/detective in medieval England. Great historical color. "
— Sally, 2/1/2014" I still really like Adelia, and her sort-of friendship with King Henry is progressing nicely. But the whole romance aspect seems really tacked on, especially since she and Rowley are only together for about a 10 pages out of the book. Plus it's hard to understand why Adelia even likes him, other than I guess he's good in bed. But a tumble every two years isn't a relationship. "
— Pancha, 2/1/2014" This series just keeps getting better! "
— Judith, 1/30/2014" Fascinating mixture of historical mystery and King Arthur legends with Salerno-trained female physician and King Henry II. "
— Melanie, 1/23/2014" Although this book was not as good as the second or the first, it was still a suspencefull story that keeps the readers turing the pages even when they want to put the book down. "
— Sylvia, 1/8/2014" This was better than the second book in the series and gave me some hope for the next one. "
— Mary, 12/25/2013" I love this series. And I'm especially glad this one didn't involve any dead children! "
— Stacey, 11/23/2013" I love this series and find them to be a great combination of history and mystery, as well as a little romance thrown in. "
— Jacquie, 11/10/2013" A good summer read; should read the first two in the series as it gives depth to the characters, their actions, and motivatins. "
— Susy, 6/7/2013" Again a masterpiece. I dont want to repeat myself with my praises, so lets just say: What the heck are you waiting for? Go and start this awesome series! Marvelous books! "
— Janosch, 5/23/2013" Best of the series, with the Mistress in top form, a Henry II drawn clear enough to chew scenery, and maybe, quite possible, the bones of a once and future king. Go read! "
— Djarum99, 10/25/2012" 3.75 stars! (I feel very limited by 5 stars). "
— Joy, 11/21/2011" Third in the series...maybe I was overdoing it by reading all three back-to-back, but this one just didn't grab me like the others. Same thing happened to me when I read Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy back-to-back.

Anyway, it's a fun yarn. Looooove English historical fiction. "
— Lori, 6/15/2011" This is a great series. The characters just get better and better. the King Authur twist added some mystery. Well worth the reaf if you like very human characters, histiry and a who done it all roled into one. "
— Deborah, 6/8/2011" I enjoyed the book but did find it rather tedious in sections. I enjoyed her other books much more. "
— Helen, 5/18/2011" Again a masterpiece. I dont want to repeat myself with my praises, so lets just say: What the heck are you waiting for? Go and start this awesome series! Marvelous books! "
— Janosch, 4/25/2011" Most enjoyable, quick read and historically accurate-looking forward to the 4th one "
— Diane, 4/25/2011" Best of the series so far! Looking forward to reading the next one. "
