"I loved this, in fact I got so caught up in this book that I seriously considered phoning the friend I was meeting to say that something had come up and that I had to cancel. It moves along at a good pace although the identity of the bad guy was to obvious which stops this from being a 5* read. "
— Karen (4 out of 5 stars)
“Sprinkled with fascinating historical facts about the medieval period, Franklin's plots always intrigue.”
— Library Journal“An exhilarating whodunit and my favourite book of the year. I'd like to crown Ariana Franklin Queen of the Historical Mystery.”
— Tess Gerritsen, author of the Rizzoli & Isles series“Franklin's research is exhaustive-but never exhausting for the reader-and adds a wealth of historical color to a good yarn. And her cliffhanger ending will have readers yearning for the next installment in the adventures of the fascinating Adelia, an early feminist, a loving mother, a skilled doctor and an ardent lover.”
— Richmond Times-Dispatch“The stellar Mistress of the Art of Death series continues!…The author gracefully incorporates her knowledge of the period into a riveting and suspenseful story.”
— Historical Novels Review" Another great addition to the Mistress of Death series with an ending that left me wanting the next installment NOW! "
— Rita, 2/14/2014" A much less interesting plot than the previous three in the series. Instead of a mystery, it's more of a travelogue where the heroine keeps falling into peril. The only real mystery she solves is about the death of a goat. The overarching mystery was the true identity of Scarry, which is not a compelling enough question to keep one riveted through the whole book (particularly because it's fairly easy to narrow it down to two or three possibilities). And the book ends abruptly (a bit of a forced cliffhanger). "
— Mariesa, 2/12/2014" I really enjoyed this one--might be my favorite in the series! I was sorely disappointed to realize this would be the last in the series, since the author passed in 2011. The book leaves you on such a cliffhanger!! I am glad to have read this series. "
— Stacy, 1/31/2014" The series continued with anticipation of what was to come. I was again surprised by the events that were unfolding and wish the last and final book was already released! I want to know how it all ends! "
— Priscilla, 1/18/2014" I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. The sad part is that it leaves you hanging and I don't know if the author wrote a follow-up book before she passed away. After reading all four books in the series I was very wrapped up in the characters and need to know how it ends. "
— Barbara, 1/7/2014" Ugh! I just could not get into this book. The setting and characters were just not there for me. So, alas, I cannot finish this novel and will never know if anyone is killed. "
— Suzy, 12/31/2013" I love Aeriana Frankin's stories. This was one of her best historical mysteries and you get to meet Adelia'a parents. If you like historical novels (takes place during Henry II reign)and mysteries give this Ariana's books a try. Start with Mistress of the Art of Death - enjoy "
— Susan, 12/31/2013" I really was drawn into this story, as I am with all her other mysteries. I believe this is one is my favorite. The ending had me crying, laughing and saying OH NO!!!!!! Having to wait for the next book to find out what is going to happen! "
— Lorie, 12/28/2013" I thought this was the best book in the series do far, though I didn't like the open ending that it had - now I'll have to wait for the next book to come out to see how things went! "
— Tami, 12/22/2013" Creeped out by the demonic creatures thoughts - this is the first by this author I have not finished. "
— hoganfe, 10/30/2013" Again, historical (King Henry II England), woman doctor of pathology. Mystery. "
— Jeanne, 10/30/2013" I love Mistress of the Art of Death! These books are great. If you like history, culture, or murder mysteries, you would also like them. This particular one didn't have enough sleuthing in it compared to the others, but I still enjoyed it. "
— Megan, 8/1/2013" Enjoyed this one too. However, the third was my favorite. It's a shame the author died. I want more! "
— KT, 4/8/2013" I don't know why I love these books so much, but I do. A little bit historical noval, a little bit adventure murder mystery. Fun read. "
— Legustafson, 3/1/2013" I was crushed to hear of Diana Norman (aka Ariana Franklin)'s passing earlier this year. Now we're trying to find copies of the historical romances she wrote under her own name. "
— Destructo, 2/8/2013" I don't like unanswered questions, "
— Kim, 1/28/2013" This was one of the better Mistress of the Art of Death books. I hope she comes out with another one. I could not put this book down. Ariana can really keep your interest. "
— Elizabeth, 7/21/2011" I do believe I liked this better that the third of the series - I'm also happy about the promising cliffhanger, as it means more books! This stuff is honestly like one-day fluff reading... about murder and history. I'm such a nerd. "
— Colleen, 7/3/2011" Number 4 in the series--missed #3 somehow--Adelia and Mansur are deputed to accompany Henry II's daughter Joanna to Sicily for her wedding. There are serious illnesses, deaths, and meetings with a group of holy heretics--oh, and King Arthur's sword Excalibur is stolen along the way. "
— Joyce, 6/28/2011" Another series of historical fiction that I've been following. I like her heroine, a woman doctor from the 12th c; apparently there were a few such women trained in the more cosmopolitan city-centers of Asia Minor and Southern Europe. An entertaining escape from the 21st c.! "
— Melanie, 6/9/2011" History. Mystery. Intercultural conflict. Women heroes. What more can I say? "
— Tina, 5/30/2011" Loved the way they bring her back to her home and history. Not as dark as her other stories. "
— Tiana, 5/26/2011" I love this character and series. Too bad the author passed away and I will never find out what other adventures she has. "
— Beth, 5/16/2011" This was a re-read for me and I continue to feel like none of the subsequent books live up to the first in the series but I enjoy the series anyway. "
— Rachel, 5/16/2011" Hated the ending...and the author has now passed away :( so no hope for another in the series to wrap up loose ends. "
