England, 1176. Beautiful, tranquil Glastonbury Abbey - one of England's holiest sites, and believed by some to be King Arthur's sacred Isle of Avalon - has been burned almost to the ground. The arsonist remains at large, but the fire has uncovered something even more shocking: two hidden skeletons, a man and a woman. The skeletons' height and age send rumors flying - are the remains those of Arthur and Guinevere?

King Henry II hopes so. Struggling to put down a rebellion in Wales, where the legend of Celtic savior Arthur is particularly strong, Henry wants definitive proof that the bones are Arthur's. If the rebels are sure that the Once and Future King will not be coming to their aid, Henry can stamp out the insurgence for good. He calls on Adelia Aguilar, Mistress of the Art of Death, to examine the bones. Henry's summons comes not a moment too soon, for Adelia has worn out her welcome in Cambridge. As word of her healing powers has spread, so have rumors of witchcraft. So Adelia and her household ride to Glastonbury, where the investigation into the abbey fire will be overseen by the Church authorities - in this case, the Bishop of St. Albans, who happens also to be the father of Adelia's daughter. " Third in the "Mistress" series, and unfortunately, it's been a while since I read book 1 and I've somehow skipped book 2 [return][return]My discomfort at the modern terminology has been lessened from Book 1, primarly because she does little around dead bodies in this book - most of the story revolves around her investigations over 2 bodies discovered after Glastonbury burns down. King Henry II wishes these can be claimed to be King Arthur and Guinevere, to help put down the rebellious Welsh. "

" I still really like Adelia, and her sort-of friendship with King Henry is progressing nicely. But the whole romance aspect seems really tacked on, especially since she and Rowley are only together for about a 10 pages out of the book. Plus it's hard to understand why Adelia even likes him, other than I guess he's good in bed. But a tumble every two years isn't a relationship. "

" Best of the series, with the Mistress in top form, a Henry II drawn clear enough to chew scenery, and maybe, quite possible, the bones of a once and future king. Go read! "

" Much praised series, I was kind of Meh about the first so didn't read second, whose reported storyline didn't snare me. This one sounded more interesting and was indeed, very good, better than the first and compulsively readable. "

" Third in the series...maybe I was overdoing it by reading all three back-to-back, but this one just didn't grab me like the others. Same thing happened to me when I read Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy back-to-back.

Anyway, it's a fun yarn. Looooove English historical fiction. "
