Casey Ellis has arrived at a lonely place in her life. Her mother remains in a comatose state several years after a terrible accident -- and now her father has died.
Although Casey never met him, she held an oblique hope that someday her father might acknowledge her. She watched from afar as the illustrious Dr. Cornelius Unger became a celebrated psychologist and teacher. Through it all, she clung to the illusive dream that someday he might take notice of her -- and now it is too late.
It comes as a shock when she learns that he has left her his beautiful townhouse in Boston's exclusive Beacon Hill. Sensing that her father had an ulterior motive in leaving her the house, Casey searches the house and finds the first part of what could be a novel, a journal, or a case study for one of her father's clients. The manuscript tells the harrowing story of a young woman named Jenny who was sexually abused by her father and emotionally abused by her mother. When her mother was murdered, her father was sent to prison. After only six years in jail, he is about to be released, and Jenny knows she has to escape. Her way out appears in the form of a man named Pete who shows up on his motorcycle and offers to whisk her away.
Convinced the story is true, Casey sets out to find the rest of the pages and help Jenny. With the discovery of each additional segment, she learns more about Jenny, about herself, and about Cornelius Unger. The manuscript, when fully assembled, proves to be the key to understanding not only her father's past but also that of the man Casey has come to love.

"Its a book within a book, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, well both books. I won't give anything away but its a definite page-turner. I didn't expect it to be as good a mystery as it was. My favourite character is Jenny, the main character of the book within this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes chick-lit or mysteries."

“Dramatic and satisfying.”
— Houston Chronicle“This is another ‘I didn't want to put it down’ novel from Delinsky…Highly recommended for all public libraries.
— Library Journal“Delinsky weaves Jenny’s story through the novel and meshes her and Casey’s fates in a melodramatic climax…Sophisticated and fast moving…[and] will satisfy her fans and may even win her some new readers.”
— Publishers Weekly“Fantasy battles reality in Delinsky’s emotive novel of discovery and denial, love and liberation. Seamlessly and compassionately weaving Jenny’s unsettling past with Case’s uncertain future, Delinsky delivers a scintillating study of each woman’s search for answers and absolution.”

— Sarah, 3/31/2013" Delinsky often models her stories after Cinderella. You can ALWAYS expect the handsome hero to rescue the heroine. However, I liked this book more than some of her others I've read in the past. It had two interesting storylines, and I wasn't anticipating the way they were to eventually intersect. "

— Gretchen, 12/21/2011" This was the first book that I read by Barbara Delinsky. I really enjoyed the combination of the stories. It was a challenge to keep up with both stories, but in the end they come together. I have yet to be dissapointed in a Delinsky novel. "
— Cari, 12/18/2011" Story of woman who never knew anything about her father until she inherited his townhouse. "
— Rebecca, 11/27/2011" I wasn't too sure about this one at first. It took me awhile to get into it but once I did I was obsessed with the story within the story. It had a little mystery flare to it as well. I found it interesting to see how we try so hard to please an absentee parent. Psychology can be twisted. "
— Jenn, 11/11/2011" Not my usual type of book but it was worth reading. I would definitely read more by this author. "
— Judy, 11/8/2011" i think it's a bit too much on the description on the surrounding ... but overall, the plot and the characters are perfect !!!! =DDDDD "
— stella, 11/1/2011" I think I really like Barbara Delinsky, but she deals with some interesting stuff that you don't think about all the time - suicide, etc. This was a good book - made you go "hmmm". "
