Paris Minton is minding his own business when a beautiful woman named Elana Love walks into his bookstore. Within the next 24 hours, Paris has been beaten up, made love to, shot at, robbed, and his bookstore has been burned to the ground. He's in so much trouble he has no choice but to get his friend Fearless Jones out of jail to help.

Fearless Jones is an army veteran, a man who is proud of his accomplishments during World War II and refuses to step into the background now that the war is over. Violence dogs Fearless' every step, and Paris has tried to keep his distance. But there's no friend like the one you need.

The two set out to find the elusive Elana Love, and every step leads them deeper into a bewildering vortex of money and betrayal. These two black men in 1950s Los Angeles have few rights, little money, and no recourse under attack. But they have their friends, their wits, and their knowledge of the way the world really works to help them prevail.

" I regret buying this. Dull story and ridiculous characters make for a painful read. I had to really push myself to finish it because I really wanted to give up about 100 pages into it. "

" Another great set of characters, gun-swinging action and complicated criminal plots by Walter Moseley! I could have done without descriptions of the narrator's manhood and sexual entanglements (is it perhaps a neurological condition that leaves him unconscious after every romantic encounter?), but these were minor annoyances in an otherwise fun reading experience. "

" This book was intresting and held my attention from start to finish . One thing from the book that i learned was that it is always good to have a friend . For example, Fearless and Mr. Minton . The both of them were the best of friends eventhough it seemed as though Paris couldn't stand Fearless at times. Throughout the book, Paris and Fearless' relationship held them together and eventually got them out of their situation. "

" I am almost finished... I just love the way Mosley writes. His imagery is superb, you really "hear" the voice of each character, and he simply tells a great story. "
