"Actually, I am reading this for the second time...the first being about 15 years ago. It is every bit as enjoyable this time as it was then. For anyone who is an animal lover it is a feast of interesting stories written by a man who knew first-hand what it was like to birth a calf that was too big to be born or save a beloved dog that developed diabetes...and on and on and on. It is not only the critter stories that are wonderful--their "people" are just as interesting as is writing about the Yorkshire area of Great Britain. Each chapter is a story in itself making for an easy, fast read that I would recommend for all friends of animals, lovers of humorous writing and human nature."

Let me rephrase that, whoever likes good humor and bittersweet moments in stories that will make your heart soften as Mr. Herriot tells of his patients one by one you should buy this book and if you like this one, you'll adore the whole series. " A timeless, feel-good classic - I blew through it in two sittings because I could not tear myself away from triumphs and frustrations of Yorkshire's animal kingdom. I was greatly saddened to note that the last time the book had been checked out of the library was 2008 - I hope Herriot's gems, this one especially, are not being lost to modern readers. "

About James Herriot

James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs, including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age twenty-three, he qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of fifty. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight.
