"Harriot shows up what the Yorkshire countryside is like through his delightful depictions of the people, landscape, and the animals. This story is set during WWII when he learn to fly with the RAF...it seems each time he enters a new adventure in the RAF his mind wanders off to the hills and dales of his home county. A wonderful read for anyone who enjoys the voice of a story teller."

“Christopher Timothy played James Herriot in the beloved BBC series "All Creatures Great and Small." Here Timothy reprises his role as the young country vet in this third collection of Herriot stories....Sit back with a cup of tea as Timothy tells you funny, gentle and occassionally sad tales about characters such as local farmers with broad accents; the posh Mrs. Pomphrey, whose overfed Poermanian passes gas; and the Ministry of Agriculture officials, who rake James over the coals for inept form-filling. Timothy develops countless individual voices with different class accents, and all are perfect.
— AudioFile... humor, realism, sensitivity, earthiness... gentle compassion and a lively sense of the sad, the ridiculous, and the admirable.
— Columbus Dispatch" I loved reading about his military experience. He made me want to join a boot camp fitness class. However, the author then suddenly goes into farm experiences about putting older animals to sleep. I got a little confused. I started to skip paragraphs. I also didn't make sense of the dialogue. Mr. Herriot is a good writer, but I give it three stars because the reminiscing between military and farm was too confusing for me. "

At age twenty-three, he qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice.
