Claiming God commanded her to gruesomely murder her three small children, a radical political-science professor with a high-profile politician husband pleads insanity, leaving New York District Attorney Roger "Butch" Karp the arduous—and incredibly unpopular—task of proving that she's not. Meanwhile, an American-born jihadist detonates a suicide bomb inside a Manhattan synagogue. A harrowing question links the violent crimes: Is there any defense for a killer who believes that committing murder is God's will?
As Karp, his wife Marlene, their daughter Lucy, and a cast of eccentric accomplices begin a deadly manhunt, they uncover an intricate terrorist plot to paralyze New York's emergency response system and cripple the economy. They must find an assassin known only as "The Sheik" before he orchestrates a bloody massacre that could devastate the country forever.

"Butch Carp, NYC DA and wife, Marlene...Muslim terrorists try to blow up Wall Street computer...describes all of the fail safes and safeguards against Wall Street crash and hedge funds...written well before failures of summer 2008–supposedly this kind of thing couldn’t happen !!!!!!! "

" I actually gave up on this book about 3/4 of the way through. It was long and not engaging -- his normal characters were getting very limited face time, and the family members are really what drive most of his books. This one felt like it was written by another author using Tanenbaum's characters. "
— Lisa, 2/16/2014" This was my first Tanenbaum book and I found it very confusing! Ther were at least 4 different plot lines from a court trial about a mother murdering her children to an Islamic terrorist plot. I wish he had just stuck with the trial as I found it very interesting!! "
— Tory, 2/9/2014" If you like fast moving, testosterone laden novels this is for you. Tanenbaum is really good in this novel and he has written a good one here. His cast of characters are a compelling as ever. It is a fast-paced thriller that is a fun if escapiis read. "
— Richard, 2/4/2014" As usual Tanenbaum gives a good story and holds ones interest. He also keeps his stories in line with the real world "
— Dorothy, 1/31/2014" I love this author. He has a twisted sense of humor. "
— Cheryl, 1/18/2014" somewhat wordy...complicated dual plots...but some excellent character developments and a twisting interconnection regarding what appeared to be different stories...moved infinitely faster over the last third of the book...did not fuel any enthusiasm for continued reading of this author... JLM "
— Jim, 12/30/2013" ok. too many wide spread threads merge to be believable but still readable. "
— Ruth, 12/26/2013" love the old characters but plot was long and not as exciting "
— Jegdsw, 12/24/2013" I wish it were possible to give books zero stars... Negative stars would be even better. "
— Ali, 12/4/2013" Horrible inclusion of Jihadists into a court room drama. Yuck. "
— Pnorman811, 11/13/2013" Gave this one a good try, but, every time a character was introduced the author retold the history of that person's relationship to Butch Karp. I tired of reading sidebars that seemed only to interrupt the main story, and gave up after the first 100 pages. "
— Robin, 8/12/2013" great read as usual .... none of the good guys get hurt, you always learn something interesting (in this case, some Jewish history and some interesting history of Wall Street) and it keeps you amused. "
— Holly, 7/3/2013" I had read that this one was better than the last few, and I do agree, but I think it could have been 100-150 pages shorter and been even better. "
— Sherree, 6/19/2013" The courtroom scenes are interesting to me. The family dynamics are interesting. He has gotten way too involved in middle eastern intrigue--six million characters. "
— Kathy, 9/23/2012" It's been a long time since I read a paperback that was almost 700 pages long. I think there was just a little too much backstory, but otherwise a very good book "
— Robert, 7/2/2012" recommend this book to anyone who likes books that keep you guessing and interested. I liked it very much - "
— Renie, 5/31/2012" No. 20 of Butch & Marlene "
— Vicki, 2/7/2012" not believable at all.... contrived, but always a good story teller. "
— Lori, 9/3/2011" Another good one by Tanenbaum. If you're a fan of Butch and Marlene, you'll enjoy this one. "
— Phaedra221, 7/4/2011" I'm not sure why I bothered finishing this book. So disappointing. Earlier books in this series were great, but he no longer has a ghost writer and it really shows. Was there even an editor on this? "
