The dragon keepers and the fledgling dragons are forging a passage up the treacherous Rain Wild River. They are in search of the mythical Elderling city of Kelsingra and are accompanied by the liveship Tarman, its captain, Leftrin, and a group of hunters who must search the forests for game with which to keep the dragons fed. With them are Alise, who has escaped her cold marriage to the cruel libertine Hest Finbok in order to continue her study of dragons, and Hest's amanuensis, Bingtown dandy Sedric. Rivalries and romances are already threatening to disrupt the band of explorers-but external forces may prove to be even more dangerous. Chalcedean merchants are keen to lay hands on dragon blood and organs to turn them to medicines and profit. Their traitor has infiltrated the expedition and will stop at nothing to obtain the coveted body parts. And then there are the Rain Wilds themselves: mysterious, unstable, and ever perilous, its mighty river running with acid, its jungle impenetrable, and its waterways uncharted. Will the expedition reach its destination unscathed? Does the city of Kelsingra even exist? Only one thing is certain: the journey will leave none of the dragons nor their human companions unchanged by the experience. Download and start listening now!

Quotes & Awards

  • “The second volume of the Rain Wilds Chronicles shows Hobb again working at the highest level of contemporary fantasy, to which her creativity with dragons adds additional—there’s no other word for it—majesty…The Rain Wilds is one of the most gripping settings in modern fantasy…Let us applaud, and shelve this with the rest of Hobb’s magisterial fantasy fiction, though it won’t stay on the shelf long.”

" There are some really great moments and characters in this trilogy, and even paragraphs that I would quote, in relevant situations (that have nothing to do with fantasy dragon worlds). Love Ms. Hobb. I think what she expresses in her stories, the themes, are so astute and realized and her characters are complex and yet so compelling. Check her out, she is great. "

" I see what everyone is saying about how sometimes as you're reading you're all like, REDUNDANTSAUCE or, SPIT IT OUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH, HOBB. I get it now, I do. But even so, rewarding read, totally worth the slow buildup. Here I come Book 3, then on to the galley! Sheesh. Wish me luck. "

" c2010 My favourite kind of story - dragons!!!! I find it interesting that the dragon myths have grown over the last twenty to thirty years so now certain aspects of dragon culture have become almost factual - how weird is that. I had no problem picking up the story line and Sintara, Thymara, Alise, Sedric all burst into life again. Great read but I felt this time that there were a few incidents that should have taken up paragraphs as opposed to pages but I understand that this is sometimes necessary to lay the groundwork for the next instalment. At least they reached Kelsingra. (Oh, and I loved the inclusion and expansion of Tarman) "

" I found this an absolutely wonderful and tantalizing second installment of The Rain Wild Chronicles. The beautiful description of the settings once again transported me to The Rain Wild. I wished the book was longer because I didn't want the book to end, but I was happy with how the book did end and the growth of the characters. I cannot wait for the next installment! "
