Twenty-six years ago, just before a series of brutal murders rocked the idyllic town of Bowers Inlet, Cassie Burke lost her family and nearly her own life to a transient. Back then, Cassie was a scared kid; now, she's a homicide cop. Back then, the suspect was caught and convicted and died in prison. But now the killing has started again, and all signs indicate that the Bayside Strangler has come back for more.
With too many victims and too few suspects, Cassie has her hands full investigating the case while working through the old trauma it has brought to the surface. Luckily, FBI agent Rick Cisco is dispatched to lend support. Together, Cassie and Rick must uncover the link between the dark past and the dangerous present to bring this small town's long nightmare to an end.

"Another great suspense novel by Mariah Stewart. I enjoyed it very much and it kept me guessing until the killer was finally revealed. My only complaint is that a little romance would go along way. I don't understand how this can be classified as a romantic suspense - there really isn't any."
— Colleen (4 out of 5 stars)
“The author’s flair for complex characterization makes…the book’s professional-turned-personal relationships at least as intriguing and enjoyable as its subtle suspense.”
— Publishers Weekly" Meh... the mystery aspect wasn't too bad but I found the characters were either largely undeveloped or I just didn't care about them enough to get really involved with the story. The overall plot was tedious and brought nothing new or exciting to the genre. You've got your typical FBI agent, the same profiler that says that spits out the same profile as every other serial killer out there, the same local cop with a haunted past blah, blah, blah...Like I said Meh... "
— Shiela, 2/18/2014" This is a good series, each book has a great twist. Careful though, they are all murder mysteries, but they all also have mushy romance in them so don't read if that puts you off. "
— Ali, 1/6/2014" Cassie's family was murdered when she was 6 and she grew up to be a police detective in her home town on the Jersey shore. She is called to a murder that was very similar to a streak of unsolved murders from 26 years ago, the summer her family was killed. "
— Joyce, 12/16/2013" I really enjoyed this. As I've said before, the characters are very likable people, and despite procedural errors and some implausible circumstances -- I think I would call them American cozies. =;) "
— Marianne, 12/9/2013" Enjoyed this book; didn't read it for a long time because it was tagged as a romance. Someone has a very different idea of romance....I did not find it romantic, but suspenseful and tense. A thriller/mystery. "
— Deidre, 12/3/2013" This has a pretty good storyline, would have preferred a less candy version with a little more blood and guts. "
— Carmen, 11/15/2013" Detective Cassie Burke investigates a murder in Bowers Inlet, as small NJ shore town. It soon becomes clear that a serial murderer is on the loose and all indications are that the Bayside Strangler has returned after 20 years. A good forensic mystery. "
— Janet, 3/3/2013" Even Anna Fields couldn't make this a winner. "
— Jo-Ann, 2/23/2013" Goosebumps! Mariah Stewart's trilogies are amazing either reading individually or all together. Great read. "
— Tina, 10/24/2012" The end was good, but kind of predictable. I like that Cass was so tough though right until the end. I will be starting the third book soon. I know this Eddie Kroll character is going to be important but it won't probably be until the end. "
— Ashley, 8/15/2012" I really like all of this series. "
— Christine, 8/7/2012" The author had the main character's "back up" be a FBI agent so I was hooked into reading it from the cover. It was a good suspense novel that kept me wanting to read more. "
— Jennifer, 6/16/2012" Very good, I like the way the murders over 26 years were connected. Look forward to reading the next book in the series. "
— Lorna, 10/18/2011" Ok mystery book where everyone is pretty and gets the fella in the end "
— Magnoire, 8/23/2011" Dithering between 3 and 4 stars. Settling for 3 (3.75) because I couldn't really 'connect' with the characters. Excellent story, though. "
— Barbara, 4/30/2011" If you like Mary Higgins Clark you will like any books by Mariah Stewart. Her books are quick reads. Great beach reads! "
— Karen, 3/18/2011" This was my first Mariah Stewart book. It started out really slow for me. I put it down and did not pick it up for several months. Once I picked it back up I could not put it down. I really liked it. "
